Lonnie has exhibited mouthing behaviors when anxious and has escalated to thrashing and biting the leash during leashing. He has also shown discomfort with touch in certain areas. Medically, Lonnie is clinically healthy. Lonnie arrived to the care center as an owner surrender due to moving to a no pet policy home. In the prior home Lonnie was social, affectionate, and very active. He likes to spend his time in the home where people are. He loves bath time and allows his family to bathe/groom him. Loonie has not adjusted well to the care center environment. He displays avoidant behavior, heavy panting, and signs of tension, including pacing, jumping, mouthing, and leash biting. When handled, Lonnie becomes increasingly reactive, thrashing when collared or leashed, which has prevented a full handling assessment. Despite his moments of social behavior, Lonnie requires additional decompression time in a calm and controlled environment to help reduce his stress levels. Lonnie is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Lonnie Potential challenges we recommend he is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner- Lonnie arrived to the care center as an owner surrender due to moving to a no pet policy home. In the prior home Lonnie was social, affectionate, and very active. He likes to spend his time in the home where people are. He loves bath time and allows his family to bathe/groom him. Loonie has not adjusted well to the care center environment. Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition- Lonnie has displayed high level of jumping and mouthiness at the care center. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety- In the care center Lonnie has displayed mild levels of anxiety panting, red eyes, not being able to settle. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Leash-biting/Strength/leash pulling- Lonnie is quick to grab the leash in his mouth. We recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Lonnie is also reported to pull hard on the leash while on walks. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the lease. Please see handout on leash-biting and Strength/leash pulling.
