Animal Profile

Violet

Hello, my name is Violet. My animal id is #227521. I am a desexed female gray cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 6 months old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 5/22/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Violet is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Violet was brought to us after moving around a little bit and she's someone who takes managing her time and things so very seriously. Some of us are sharers and give from our hearts with a bright and happy smile. Others of us may not have a whole lot of control so we create it where we can. There's space for all kinds, but as you can imagine, shelter life brings some challenges for an organizer like Violet. She's been a little unsure at the Care Center and it seems like she's kind of had a run of that lately. Sometimes we see Violet up at the front because she's curious and wants to see what's happening and other times she prefers to be in her thoughts. A patient home where Violet can arrange her time and her things as she likes will be a great fit for this sparkly young cat.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/28/25 FB58 laying at the front of the cage with a tense face and body - whines and hisses as the cage cover is lifted 1/2 way up. I offer some dry treats in the cubby and she hisses again, low growling. When I then offer SU through the crack in the door, she steps forward and begins to eat as well as the rest of the squeeze up placed in the cubby. When I check back later, she is in her den with her head poking out and has eaten all the squeeze up and treats. 6/04/25 FB61 Today we did play therapy. She watched the fishing pole toy and pawed at her door to try and get it. I reward her with treats so she feels like she caught it and ate it. She is not yet ready for petting and strikes her kennel so hard she hurts her paw. Poor mamas. Limited interaction to reduce injury. 6/5/25 FB79 At the front of her cubby, Violet sits with her paws tucked away and almond eyes; she immediately hisses and swats/strikes at the glass when i approach and attempt to touch her kennel. She remains put and continues to hiss and growl at me with no wide/dilated eyes and her ears flat to her head. I do no attempt to open the cubby or the kennel door. 6/7/25 FB79 Today, Violet watched the rain at the front of her kennel and meowed quietly when i approached and spoke to her; she slow blinked and continued to look at out the window. She accepted all treats and there was no hissing today - she sat with a loose tail and neutral body while being very tolerant of my presence near her kennel. 6/9/25 FB79 Violet is at the front of her cubby with neutral eyes and a relaxed body; she slow blinks when i speak to her but then hisses and starts to low growl after. She fixates on my hand as her eyes dilate and she watches it for any movement as her tail start to thump. 6/13/25 FB61 At front of kennel upon approach, body and face relaxed with her tail raised high. She head-butts the kennel door and remains in front of her kennel as I open the door. She allows petting along her head and body with the assess-a-hand while leaning in, arching her back and waving her tail around with energy. She whips her head and moves her face towards the assess-a-hand a few times as if she's going to bite! However she stops short and doesn't commit. I pet her with more energy and she does not escalate further. Did great today! If these behaviors remain consistent she can receive a re-evaluation. 6/16/25 FB79 At the front of her kennel, Violet has a neutral face with a high tail and she slow blinks when spoken to; she has no interest in treats at first and head bunts the hand for head and cheek pets which she harshly leans to the side for more. After a few pets down her body Violet would stress meow while turning to the side and get mouthy with the hand w/o actually biting. Shortly after, she started to enjoy her treats and tolerated all pets while no reaction while eating her snacks. -GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back,Mellow

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to the behaviors displayed during in shelter evaluation as well as previous home notes; PLEASE SEE 'KNOWN HISTORY' ABOVE.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Inside of her den, Violet is out of sight and when the assess-a-hand is placed near the den opening she can be heard growling/grumbling; when slowly introduced Violet strikes the tool with force, quickly exits with wide/dilated eyes and tilted ears and attempts to exit the kennel by lunging forward at the assessor. When the kennel door is closed to prevent her from escaping she hisses and swats at the glass while grumbling and lip licking. Further contact was not attempted due to Violet remaining at the very front of the glass with her tail thumping, eyes wide and her ears now flat to her head. When trying to retrieve the tool that was left behind in the den, Violet would forcefully strike and bite the other tools that were used while still hissing and growling/grumbling loudly. Violet is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He/she has tried to swat/scratch/bite and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
