Animal Profile

Oreo Milkshake

Hello, my name is Oreo Milkshake. My animal id is #219242. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 1/24/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Oreo Milkshake is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Oreo Milkshake doesn't make too many appearances outside of his den. He just hasn't been able to summon the bravery as there's always so much going on and he's actually pretty nervous. I'm sure Oreo Milkshake has plenty to say about everything he sees and knows, but conversation with Oreo Milkshake requires some patience. He gives the cat equivalent of monosyllabic answers with his tail wrapped tightly around him in an effort to find some comfort and maybe even in his hope that we'll just forget he's there. I want to know what he thinks of the window, the food, and how his much too long stretch of settling in has been going. Receiving only a "Yes, no, I don't know," in response and not a lot of elaboration to my questions, I decided to shift tracks and share some treats, which he swiftly declined. Oreo Milkshake may be feeling unsure about everything, but he's hoping to find someone who will give the patience, space, and love he needs to come out and be his best cat self.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/30/25 FB79 Inside of his den, Oreo has slightly wide eyes and forward ears when i lift the den cover for it. He hisses when i toss treats near the den for him as well as when i bring the tool inside to attempt contact; Oreo swats and strikes the tool with force and continues to hiss. 2/3/25 FB61 Lying on top of perch, head resting on floor and body and face tensed. He remains focused on me when I offer treats and a catnip toy and he doesn't move a muscle. He is frozen and tense and appears very nervous. I do not push hands on interaction at this time to reduce stress. Not interested in enrichment at this moment. 2/6/25 FB69 Inside of his den, Oreo hisses when I lift the den cover for a better view and has wide dilated eyes. He leans in to sniff the pointer tool, but shows no interest in treats when tossed in and immediately swats and strikes the tool with force before contact was made on his side. 2/16/25 FB79 inside of his den, Oreo has wide dilated eyes when I lift the den cover for a better view; when I slowly introduce the pointer tool he begins to lick lip. As i attempt to pet on his head he hisses, strikes the tool and leans into bite, but doesn’t. 2/20/25 FB79 Inside of the den when i approach Oreo Milk hisses when i open the kennel door and when i slowly introduced the tool after lifting the den cover for a better view. He swats and strikes the tool with force then process to bite and briefly holds on before i have to pull the tool out of his mouth.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Oreo Milkshake was lying on top of his perch as the assessor approached, body and face tense and head lowered onto ground. Oreo Milkshake maintained eye contact with a tense expression when spoken to and he flattened his ears completely as the kennel door opened. Oreo Milkshake tolerated petting along his head and body with the assessor's hand while remaining very still, slowly turning his head to watch the hand and flattening his ears into an airplane wing position. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 12/13/25 Although tolerant of interaction initially, Oreo Milkshake has deteriorated in the shelter environment. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool or the assess-a-hand, Oreo Milkshake will immediately strike it with claws extended. Oreo Milkshake is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
