Animal Profile

Bluebie

Hello, my name is Bluebie. My animal id is #243744. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/27/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.

Bluebie is currently at risk due to behavior concerns. Bluebie has not been doing well in kennel, pacing, barking and biting at his metal water bowl, causing his mouth to bleed. Out of kennel, he is social, seeking attention and allowing petting. However, he will leash bite and has mouthed handlers feet after leash biting. Bluebie's previous owner indicates that he is playful with strangers, children and other dogs. Medically. Bluebie is apparently healthy.

I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Date of initial:: 12/29/2025

Summary:: high energy, hyper, lots of energy

ENERGY LEVEL:: Bluebie is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Bluebie.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Bluebie's fearful disposition and capacity for defensive aggression as well as his reported resource guarding, we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Bluebie was noted to be partially house train and will have accidents in the home. Positive reinforcement should be use to manage this behavior. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Resource guarding: Bluebie was reported to guard his toys- hard barking and growling when approached. Nothing should be taken from him and he should learn the trade game using positive reinforcement. Please see the handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During his assessment, Bluebie was observed to frequently jump on handlers seeking social interaction. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: During his assessment Bluebie was observed to mouth handlers hands and other objects when interacting with him. This is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Bluebie's teeth make contact with skin). Please see handout on Mouthiness. Handling Sensitivity: Bluebie's previous owner states that he is fearful when held/restrained and will bark and growl when pushed/pulled off furniture. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Bluebie to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Bluebie is noted to bark and growl when pushed off furniture. Treats should be used to encourage him to get off furniture, creating a positive association. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Arousal/Leash Biting: During his walk, Bluebie was observed to jump on the handler and began leash biting. During one instance while in kennel Bluebie was biting the leash and bit the handler on the finger. This bite did not break skin. During another instance while leash biting it was reported that Bluebie redirected onto the handlers shoe. We recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Arousal and Leash Manners.
