Animal Profile

Pirate

Hello, my name is Pirate. My animal id is #234957. I am a male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 8/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.

Pirate is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. A volunteer writes: Chubby-cheeked Pirate may look a little rough around the edges. But all this shy, curious guy needs is a pet parent willing to help boost his confidence. Brought to the Care Center from a home with many other cats, Pirate has been laying low since he's been with us, still adjusting to his new environment and not ready to solicit too much attention. When staffers approach him, he shows interest, and the fact that he's allowed gentle pettings tells us he wants to make friends--he just needs time to feel secure. (Yummy treats will help; he can't resist them!) Pirate is a true diamond in the rough--and he's waiting for the right forever family to make feel cherished and loved.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Pirate was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 8/27/25 Vol. Pirate was lying on his side inside den, with one front paw stretched out in front of him. His eyes were narrowed, with dilated pupils. He did not show interest in treats or toys. He tolerated brief petting on his head with the scratcher tool, remaining in place. While I took notes quietly, he crept partway out of den to eat wet food, moving slowly and keeping his body low to the ground. He tolerated a few gentle pats on the head while eating. After interaction he climbed on top of den and lay down. 8/31/25 Vol. Resting in cubby behind litter box with dilated eyes. Did not return slow blinks with sweet talk. Startled and sat back when the door opened again. Did not investigate a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up. Checked back after 5 minutes and had licked the squeeze-up, but left treats. Sniffed the scratcher tool when it approached and tried to evade contact. Allowed a few head scratches with airplane ears. 9/6/25 Vol. Is sitting up in cubby with body facing mostly the wall and head facing me. Offered dry treats and then squeeze up on scratcher tool. Looked but then Ignored both. Slow approach with scratcher tool to pet, but body tensed up each time and slightly leaned away. End of interaction.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back,Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Pirate was resting in his den, alert with wide eyes and ears forward. Wary of his surroundings but allowed petting with a scratcher tool. Remained in the den and ate treats when left alone. Pirate tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
