Date of assessment:: 3/18/2026
Summary:: Oreo Twinkie is observed to be highly fearful while in care. Noted to push away from kennel and thrash when handlers attempt to return her. Her previous owner states that she also has handling sensitivity. Oreo has bitten twice when the owner has touched her collar. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety and her bite history. Oreo is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary:: 3/22/26- Oreo Twinkie gate greets another dog with a loose and wiggly body while sniffing with a wagging tail. She jumps on the door and whines.
Summary (1):: Oreo Twinkie is bilingual (English/Spanish). She know sit, stay, and paw. Highly play and food motivated. Her special snacks she loves eggs, carrots, and apples.
Summary (6):: 3/18/26: Oreo Twinkie is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. The handler brings Oreo to the yard; there, he sniffs the handler and around the pen. Oreo alo looks over at the dog in the adjacent pen with a neutral body; he maintains his focus on said dog until the handler calls him away. After the handler exits the pen, Oreo begins to pull hard in the opposite direction, but the handler adds leash tension and walks him back into the building. Outside of the room, Oreo lowers his body, but enters the room. The handler muscles him into kennel and remove the leash. 3/15/26:(PM WALKS) Oreo Twinkie at the front tense, easily leashed pulls out, tries to go in a different directions as she is walked to the backyard. Oreo paces around slowly, sniffing her surroundings. She takes a notice in some pigeons landing nearby, climbing up on the fence and sniffing towards them. When they fly away Oreo follows them around. Handler talks to her and approaches with a soft body and wagging tail. She does not solicit attention from the handler. The handler touches her briefly she does not respond. Oreo is walked slowly back to the kennel and pulls hard in the opposite direction scraping their claws on the ground. Oreo goes back and forth on each side away from the entrance. When she reaches the end of the leash, this causes her to go back and forth in a frantic way. She is slowly walked back to kennel. Oreo follows back to the kennel, still making attempts to go in a different direction, but when she reaches the end of the leash, she follows after the handler. At the entrance to the kennel room, Oreo plants and refuses to enter the room, pulling and scrambling away from the kennel. Another handler gets a sling and places it under her hips. She is brought back into the kennel room refusing to lift her paws as the handler walks her back to kennel. She is muscled into the kennel and tries to push her way out backwards. She is able to be placed into the kennel and the leash removed. Interaction is then ended.
Summary (7):: 03/15/26: Oreo is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed easily and exits kennel pulling moderately and following handler out to the driveway. Once she reaches the driveway her pulling increases slightly and she walks over to the gate and stares out at the street for a while. Oreo sees multiple dogs passing in the distance and will stare at them with a moderately tense body but can be coaxed away when called to. She explores and sniffs around the driveway for a while before being brought back inside eventually. She allows handler to clip her leash and becomes a bit frantic when reaching the kennel room, but she walks over with handler to her kennel. At the front of kennel she baulks and refuses to enter and handler has to use significant leash pressure to get her inside. 3/14/26: Staff requested assistance with returning Oreo to kennel due to frantically pulling away from entering the kennel. They sat in the office for a moment and try to place a sling under her hips to get her into kennel but she ducks away from them. She frequently backs away and pulls hard and panting in the opposite direction of the kennel. Another handler takes over and she is jogged back to kennel. She begins to push back and thrash slightly away from the kennel. Pushing herself very hard out of the kennel. Another handler assists and she is muscled into kennel by lifting her hind legs in.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Oreo Twinkie is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Oreo.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and bite history, Oreo is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Oreo's previous owner states that she will jump up often or nonstop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity: Oreo's previous owner states that she will lunge when her collar is grabbed, when her paws are touched and when she is pushed off furniture. Oreo will also escalate to biting when her collar is touched. Oreo also does not allow grooming. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Oreo to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Oreo's previous owner states that she will snap when startled. While in care, Oreo has been observed to push away from the kennel and thrash when handlers are attempting to return her. It is important to move slowly with Oreo, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Multiple Bite History/ Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Escalating to biting is a behavior that Oreo has rehearsed over their life. This behavior is likely to continue as it has become part of Oreo's repertoire, and will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Oreo and reducing the resulting bites. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Oreo's previous owner states that she will "immediately bite" when seeing small animals while on leash. Oreo will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other small animals. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Oreo's previous owner states that she will jump up and bite the leash while on walks. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
