Animal Profile

Santi

Hello, my name is Santi. My animal id is #202629. I am a desexed female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 9 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/29/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Santi is at risk due to medical concerns. Santi is a senior dog with multiple comorbidities, including a right forelimb lameness possibly due to osteoarthritis; suspected neurologic signs in all four legs with an unknown cause; and multiple suspected benign skin masses. Behaviorally, she has allows social handling and does well with training, but becomes tense and has growled and snapped with more extensive medical handling and neuro/orthopedic exam. Santi needs regular vet care, a quiet, low stress environment to help her move comfortably and enjoy her senior years.

Visit me today to find out my favorite treats and how you can take me home! Santi is a bright and determined pup enrolled in our Shelter Scholars program, where she's focusing on reducing on-leash reactivity through engagement games, leash handling techniques, and structured walks. With each session, she's learning that staying connected to her handler brings security and success. Santi's resilience and willingness to learn are paving the way for progress. My previous foster writes: When I first picked Santi up from the shelter we were able to hang outside for a few to see if we were a good match. She just hopped up right next to me and was completely chill. I quickly began to realize how much of a lover this girl really was. It was an immediate yes and we went home. Santi has very clearly been overbred and neglected. It truly is so amazing how she has such an incredible demeanor despite what she's been through. She is the biggest cuddle bug and a gentle giant. Santi knows sit stay and down and is crate trained!!! Anyone would be so lucky to adopt this girl. She really is my best foster to date. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would prefer someone who can be home with me most of the time.

My medical notes are...

She is six years old, healthy, obedient, potty trained, and crate trained. She would be the perfect match for someone looking for a sporty, athletic, and fun companion who also loves snuggling. She is highly trainable and food motivated in the sense that she learns very quickly. (Ex: I'm okay with having dogs on furniture so I let her on in my house. When visiting my boyfriends apartment, he doesn't want dogs on his furniture, and when he repeatedly told her not to get on his couch and guided her down-- with repetition, she got the picture quickly and didn't go on his furniture anymore.) So if there are house boundaries or rules that need to be set in place, she's very receptive. Santi learned the basics of roll over intuitively in one day- she's extremely smart. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Santi's history we recommend she goes to an adult-only home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- During the assessment Santi began to body block the assessor toy. it is essential to work on desensitizing her to having her possessions handled by using techniques like trading up for higher-value items and practicing "drop it" and "leave it". Please see handout on Resource guarding. Poor bite inhibition- During the assessment treats are tossed due to her taking treats roughly. Teaching her to take treats gently by rewarding calm behavior and using a clicker or marker word can help. Please see handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- During intake Santi began to side eye and growl during her medical exam when given more restraint. To address her fearfulness, gradual desensitization and counter-conditioning, especially around crates and new environments, will build her confidence. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Separation Anxiety- Santi began to display heavy panting and whining during her assessment and in her previous home becomes highly distressed when left alone, leading to prolonged barking, pacing, and inability to settle. Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. Santi would do best in a home where a person is at home for a large part of the day or with a plan so he is not alone for long periods of time. See handout on Separation Anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Santi is noted to be on leash reactive to other animals on walks in her previous home. Santi may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Strength/leash pulling: Santi is noted to hard pull on the leash.
