Shadow
Hello, my name is Shadow. My animal id is #253901. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 6/14/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormShadow is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Shadow has not been acclimating well to the shelter environment after being returned by a previous adopter due to destructive tendencies (chewed through a door), snapping at the adopter's niece when too excited (left a bruise), and when restrained. In calmer settings, Shadow is highly social with handlers, readily playing with toys, having zoomies in the behavior office, seeking attention, and can be vocal. But taking him on walks can be difficult. Shadow plants himself, pancakes, pulls back, and begins wailing once removed from his kennel. Handlers have to take a specific route in order for Shadow to willingly leave the kennel room and/or be returned to the kennel, which can be difficult at times due to daily operations. Medically, Shadow is apparently healthy.

Medically, Shadow is apparently healthy. Shadow was initially surrendered into care due to his caretaker no longer having the ability to provide adequate care for him. He was described as a social and affectionate dog who also prefers contact on his own terms. He enjoys a very active and playful lifestyle, and he is known to be vocal. He spends most of his tome where people or outside. They did note destructive tendencies, escaping the home/yard, and were reactive during walks to small animals and strangers. He was recently returned by his recent adopter due to behavior concerns that were causing landlord issues. Shadow was reported to have chewed through a door, snapped at the adopter's niece during play, which resulted in a bruise, and would also snap or attempt to bite if held or restrained. Due to these concerns, we reocmmned for shadow be placed in an adult-only home through a new hope rescue partner that can address these concerns with the use of a professional trainer. What my friends at ACC say about me: I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I need a home without cats or small animals.

Date of assessment:: 6/18/2026
Summary:: Due to the concerns noted in the previous homes and his behavior upon intake, a handling assessment is not conducted. *Prior handling assessment available upon request.*
Summary:: Shadow arrived at the care centers as an owner surrender, and is noted to have lived in a home with one LMB dogs and was described as friendly/outgoing and playful. 5/21/26: Shadow greets a novel female dog off leash through a barrier. Shadow will approach, lift his paw and remain at the gate sniffing from a distance while the female dog is loose bodied with a soft fast wagging tail, and jumping on the kennel bars whining. Shadow will walk away and start sniffing some of the yard while the female is moved away.
Summary (6):: 07/02/26: Shadow is standing at the front of kennel and begins to jump up onto the door exuberantly as the handler unlocks it. He is leashed with ease and walks to the Canine Behavior Office where he is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. Shadow is loose, wiggly, and social with both familiar and unfamiliar handlers and accepts petting with a loose frame. He engages with tennis balls for several minutes. When time to leave, Shadow baulks in the middle of the room and will roll around on the floor, handler squeaks a squeaker and he will stand up, ears perked and follows a familiar handler to the door when they encourage him with an excited tone. He returns to kennel safely. 7/1 (PM): Shadow is standing on his kennel door when a handler approaches. He is easily leashed and exits the kennel. He refuses to exit the room through one door but walks through the other; pulling back, light flailing on his back legs while vocalizing. When the handler bends to one knee, he immediately walks over and presses his body into their chest but does not take treats. The handler turns left and when in the walkway, Shadow plants and lies down, refusing to move. The handler checks to see if dogs in the wellness wing are being walked due to the barrier being up. Upon finding that this was not the case, Shadow readily walks down the ISO hallway, trotting beside the handler to the outside for his evening walk. Due to the heat, the walk is kept short. His kennel is not finished being cleaned, so he is brought to the behavior office. He remains loose bodied, occasionally leaning in for petting before walking away. Once his kennel is clean, Shadow returns to kennel without issue. 7/1: ACS staff report Shadow refusing to exit the room. He balks, rears back and begins vocalizing when trying to walk him through the door that leads into SDA. 06/27/26: An ACS reports that Shadow refused to exit the room and walk through SDA in order to exit the building for his walk. Both of the other hallways were closed due to ISO walks. Another ACS stated that Shadow will walk outside if he is able to make it to the hallway, but he stops walking when passing other dogs. 06/25/26(Dog to Dog note): Shadow needs to be coaxed to the front of his kennel with treats and avoids the leash as the handler attempts to place the loop over his head. Once leashed, he is brought to the play yard to meet a female playmate. He hesitates when approaching the greeting gate and continues to avoid handlers as they attempt to place a drag leash and collar on him. Due to his discomfort and hesitation, the interaction does not progress further, and Shadow is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. For more information, see Dog-to-Dog Assessment.
Summary (7):: 6/15/26: Shadow is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will walk out of kennel slowly. Once in the behavior office his harness that he had chewed off was removed and he was placed on a drag leash. He will approach the handlers and lean into contact but when the handler touched his back, near his tail, he will get the zoomies. He is returned to his kennel after a while and secured safely. 5/27: Sweet Shadow's notes said that he was a hard puller, but he was nervous when we walked through the shelter and stuck close to my side as we exited and started our walk. He was panting and keeping low as we walked up towards the cemetary, but then once we crossed the street and stopped so he could sniff something, he began to relax and gently bumped my hand with his nose. He was a gentle walker the whole time and showed little reaction to people passing by, including joggers. When we got to the benches to sit for a little bit, Shadow came over for pets and then stretched out on the ground at my feet. It felt like he was happy to have some quiet time away from the shelter to relax. He even did a little self grooming. When we got up to continue our walk, Shadow was much more relaxed and loose and was exploring with his nose so we took a side street to give him some extra smells to explore on the walk home. When we reached the shelter I gave him a few pets to encourage him that all would be ok, and we entered with no fear or pulling. Shadow walked confidently back to his kennel and walked in without issue. This sweet boy will need someone with patience to gain his trust but he was an absolute pleasure to walk and spend some time with today. 5/19/26 (assessment): Shadow is sleeping at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will hop out of kennel. He walks ahead of handler on a loose leash to the behavior office. He is hesitant about being fitted with a collar but on second attempt he is successfully collared. He is then placed on a drag leash and is free to roam around the room. (see assessment for more information) After the session he is returned to his kennel where he will baulk but slight leash pressure s used and will will enter the kennel. He is secured safely.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the concerns reported in both previous homes, we recommend that Shadow be placed in an adult-only home. No cats: We recommend Shadow be placed in a home without small animals due to hard barking and growling at them while on walks. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Shadow be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Shadow to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Shadow to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Shadow presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Destructive behavior: Previous owners stated he has destructive tendencies towards household items and escaped the house/yard. His previous owner stated that he had chewed through a door while in their home. Additionally, implementing management strategies such as crate training or confining him to a safe area when alone can prevent destructive behaviors. Please see handout on Destructive behavior. Handling/touch sensitivity: According to his previous adopter, while being held/restrained, Shadow will attempt to snap/bite the adopter. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful: In the prior home, he is noted to become fearful when being held/restrained and startled. During shadow medical exam he is noted to be nervous and overstimulated. Resistant to walking on leash and scared to enter new rooms. Muzzled for exam and allowed for full exam + tasks-frozen stance. Not interested in treats. No sign of aggression.To address his fearfulness, gradual desensitization and counter-conditioning, especially around new people and new environments, will build his confidence. Please see the handout on the Decompression period. Low threshold for arousal| Bite history (human): Shadow was reported to have escalated to snapping when he was playing roughly with their niece and snapped at her arm, leaving a bruise. Please see handouton arousal. Anxiety:He is described to general anxious.Managing his anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration:While on walks he will react to strangers that approach home/yard and small animals by growling or hard barking. Teach Shadow alternative behaviors, such as focusing on you or performing a "sit" cue when he sees a trigger. Consistent training and positive reinforcement will help reduce his reactivity over time.Please see handout on on-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling: He is noted to pulls hard on leash.Using tools like a no-pull harness and consistent leash training can help manage his pulling behavior. Please see handout on Strength/leash pulling.
