Animal Profile

Axel

Hello, my name is Axel. My animal id is #217817. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/31/2024.

Axel is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Axel has been highly anxious at the care center, panting, zig zagging on walks and flipping his water bowl in kennel. He also becomes easily aroused, jumping onto handlers with a tense posture and turning quickly towards touch. Axel has begun training sessions with the staff trainer and has been receptive, though is easily distracted by environmental factors such as noises. Medically, Axel is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

My medical notes are...

Weight: 63.5 lbs

Summary (4):: 4/22/25 (Trainer Note): Axel is at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken to the behavior room for a training session. He immediately engages with the LATTE items laid out on the floor, two snuffle matts. After he loses interest, handler tosses treats to the said and removes the snuffle mats. Handler begins 'Super Bowl' pattern game with Axel. He is receptive and somewhat engaged. He follows handler and will sit without a cue when arriving at the metal bowls, will sit patiently, and handler will toss treats in bowl. Process is repeated down the line. He was able to complete 3/5 trials, and based on the PDS method, handler will be 'Sticking'' to this level. Whenever a noise was heard through the door or walls, he would completely lose interest in training, orient himself towards the noise sometimes even walking towards it with a stiff body, and would fixate in that direction. Handler has to use leash pressure to get his attention once again. When pet, he becomes very loose and wiggly, heavily leaning into handlers shins. He is returned to kennel without issue 4/19/25: Axel is observed to be jumping, spinning, and hard barking at his kennel door, and flipping his water bowl in kennel. 4/16/2025: Axel is standing at the front of kennel with a loose body and toe-tapping the floor as handler approaches. Axel maintains a loose body throughout, regularly checking in with handler, as well as getting the zoomies and sprinting to the end of the leash. When spotting the pigeons, Axel would lunge and pull towards them very hard. Handler began to train 'Watch,' rewarding Axel any time he would orient himself back to handler, especially after a trigger. He is receptive and engaged. Axel is returned to kennel, he briefly kennel fights when entering the room. 4/14/25: ACS report that Axel becomes over aroused in the yard and will begin to leash bite when handlers are trying to releash him while he is on a drag leash. He is refocused with treats and sits for them but is impatient and jumps towards handlers hand with an open mouth while holding the treat. Treats are tossed on the ground for Axel outside the elevator which he takes frantically. He pulls forward hard out to the street and consistently pulls for the remainder of the interaction. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Axel so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to high anxiety and a low threshold for arousal we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety/Low threshold for arousal: Axel is highly anxious and begins to fixate on staff treats. He jumps on them with a slightly tense posture. Positive reinforcement and daily enrichment should be used to help Axel relax. Please see the handout on General Anxiety and Arousal.
