Animal Profile

Acadia

Hello, my name is Acadia. My animal id is #250750. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/28/2026.

Acadia is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I am looking for a home with a patient person. Acadia tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/3/26 Vol. Acadia was lying curled up inside den, looking out with wide dilated eyes. He did not return slow blinks. He did not show interest in treats on scratcher tool. When den cover was briefly lifted, he remained in place, with a tense body, and lip licked a few times. 4/4/26 Vol. Was in the den when approached, spoken to and door opened. was slightly curled up and looking out to me when I lifted the cover. Offered dry treats on scratcher tool and left them nearby inside den. Ignored treats. Hissed and growled. Offered squeeze up on scratcher tool. Was in hunched position and looking forward when I partially lifted cover again. Licking lips and growling. Left a felt square sprayed with Feliway nearby. End of interaction. 4/5/26 Vol. Acadia did not come out of his den. I heard him low growl when I opened the kennel door. I lifted the den cover, and he was in crouch with completely dilated pupils. He hissed and low growled when I put the scratcher with treats on it in front of the den. He continued to low growl when I talked to him; so, I ended the interaction. 04/07/26 FB47 Acadia was in the den and appeared somewhat fearful with large pupils and hissed at the assessor when approached with treats and did some licking. Catnip was left for him as well. 04/14/26 FB47 Acadia was in the den, appearing tense, with large pupils and low growling throughout the interaction.
