Animal Profile

Sirl

Hello, my name is Sirl. My animal id is #228003. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/27/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - going into care facility.

Sirl needs at risk placement for medical reasons. She has a low body condition and continues to lose weight in shelter. We are concerned she has chronic inflammation in her GI tract due to inflammatory bowel disease or neoplasia. She will need an internal medicine consultation.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Sirl needs at risk placement for medical reasons. She has a low body condition and continues to lose weight in shelter. We are concerned she has chronic inflammation in her GI tract due to inflammatory bowel disease or neoplasia. She will need an internal medicine consultation. What my friends at ACC say about me: Siri was asleep on top of the den and slowly woke up when spoken to. She sniffed treats and then allowed petting on her head and cheek until, suddenly and without warning, she gave a massive hiss and the interaction was ended. Siri tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. A volunteer writes: My heart aches for Sirl, a tiny tabby beauty who came to the Care Center after her person had to go into a care facility. Her former owner gave us an A+ description of this special lady: Sirl is equal parts couch potato and fan of toys she can bat around and pounce on. She's curious with new people and kids, and she got on with the small dog in the home. At the Care Center she's opened up to pettings and human interaction, displaying curiosity and comfort with people. But she's also shown some caution and fear as she adjusts to her new surroundings. Sirl has all the characteristics of a good and sweet girl who is trying to process the sudden change in her life. We're doing everything we can to help her, but the most important step would be to find a new home for her with pet parents who allow her time to decompress. Want to give a fraidy cat the helping hand she needs? Sirl is waiting to meet you on 110th Street.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/4/25 Vol. Sirl was curled up sleeping on top of den. She raised up into a crouch when approached. Her pupils were large, but her eyes were squinty. She sniffed at squeeze up on scratcher tool, but did not eat. When offered a hand, she head bunted gently. She came further forward on top of den to seek more petting, turning her head to get scratches in different spots. Her rear end and tail were raised in the air. She remained calm and did not show signs of overstimulation, but we kept interaction short due to previous note of unprovoked hissing. 6/3/25 Vol. Sitting on top of her den. Added some toys to her kennel. Growled at clicker with Squeeze-ups. Had zero interest in the laser or the cat dancer. Gave her some canned tuna which she devoured as she hadn’t eaten her morning meal. 6/6/25 Vol. In hidey box, could not see her. No movement or reaction to treat bowl. Approached with hard treats on scratcher tool - no movement or reaction. Let tool rest, removed and ended interaction 6/8/25 Vol. Resting in den. Crouched back and lip-licked when the front cover was raised. Ignored a cup of treats dropped into den, but leaned out to sniff the scratcher tool. Allowed head scratches, then retreated a bit. But after thinking about it, poked head back out and allowed more scratches. Repeated this a few times - seemed to enjoy the attention but was still too scared to fully lean in. 6/10/25 Vol. Sitting on top of her den. Sniffed at Squeeze-up but no interest in eating. Able to scratch her head with the tool but then she came down from the top of her den and allowed head scratches by hand. Sweet girl! 6/25/25 Vol. Sirl was resting in loaf position at front of kennel. When approached, she meowed softly and stood up, raising her tail in the air. She rubbed her face and body against kennel door. Her eyes were soft and her body was loose. She head bunted and leaned into cheek rubs, taking breaks to rub against kennel door and scratching post.
