Handsome
Hello, my name is Handsome. My animal id is #245772. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/17/2026.
Handsome is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Handsome initially presented as fearful, but over time, warmed up to handlers and staff during his stay. He enjoys treats, will lean into petting, and engages with toys. Handsome has displayed intermittent leash biting and mouthiness with handlers. On one occasion, Handsome got loose due to his jumping up and leash biting. Medically, Handsome has a wound.

Since I'm a long stay pup, my adoption fee has been reduced! Visit me today to find out my favorite treats and how you can take me home! What my friends at ACC say about me: It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary:: Handsome arrived at the care centers as a stray, so his history with other dogs is unknown. 4/22/26: Handsome greets a novel male dog at the gate and is unable to be clipped to a drag due to him being mouthy with a staff member. Handsome is neutral bodied, will offer a bow but unable to focus on the dog, jumping on the staff member and pulling towards spots to sniff. The interaction is concluded due to both dogs becoming increasing frustrated through the barrier.
Summary (5):: 4/22 (PG): Handsome is standing behind his kennel frosting when a handler approaches. He begins bouncing off the kennel door as it is unlocked. The handler is able to leash him while feeding treats. Handsome pulls hard throughout the walk to the play yard. Upon entering the yard, Handsome immediately pulls harder to the inner gate when he sees the other dog. The handler is unable to clip his collar due to his increasing arousal. He darts along the fence line and starts to head whip twice, and the handler feels his teeth graze their knuckles as he becomes mouthy. Once the interaction is complete, he begins his walk back to the kennel. The handler uses his distraction from darting into an empty pen to sniff to turn their lead into a harness. Handsome then walks back into the building with milder pulling. Once in the building, the handler drops treats and removes the rope harness. Once loose, Handosme begins jumping up and leash biting. He stops when fed treats and walks back to his kennel without further issue. 4/20: As the handler has Handsome out for a walk, Handsome starts to jump up high and manages to slip out of the leash. Handsome runs down the sidewalk and stops to play with a shopping a bag. The handler was then able to clip his collar and bring Handsome back into the shelter. From Handler's Point of View: The handler observes Handsome coming out of the kennel and jumping at medical staff. Because the leash is already clipped to itself, Handsome is able to free himself. One staff member catches Handsome, and the handler is able to leash him and bring him to medical to be weighed. The entire time, Handsome continues to be jumpy. He is panting and gets mouthy at one point, so the handler takes him outside to decompress before returning to kennel. While outside waiting for the kennel to be cleaned, the handler plays the Up Down game with him and occasionally asks him to sit. He jumps up at the handler's face, and as the handler shortens the leash, Handsome slips out and runs towards the street. He tries to follow a stranger's paper shopping bag, and is caught by the handler. The handler clips a second leash to Handsome's collar. When returning to the building, Handsome attempts to leash bite two times and pulls hard throughout the building. He is returned to his kennel without other issue.
Summary (6):: 04/09/26 (Trainer Note): Handsome is jumping at his kennel door as the handler approaches. Handsome will sit as they open the door and he is easily leashed. Handsome will pull strongly before entering the canine training room. Handsome will run on the slatmill for several minutes before being safely returned to kennel. 3/31: Volunteer Note - Handsome was jumpy and mouthy at the start, but very treat motivated. After a few repetitions of sit and reinforcing four paws on the ground, the jumping decreased and his arousal came down. Pulling, fixation, and reactivity to distractions observed, but his attention to his name is very good when paired with a treat. Redirecting and disengaging became strong and reliable. Handsome seems to learn quickly after a few consistent reps of calm behavior. 3/26/26: Handsome begins jumping up at his kennel door as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and he then pulls hard on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he continues to pull hard on the way to the yard. In the yard, he would explore around and engage in the toys that were on the ground. He would approach the handler and jump up to demand for treats. He is able to sit to receive treats and would chase after treats the handler would toss on the ground. He would stare at dogs and people as they passed by the yard and is able to be redirected with treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 3/19/26: Handsome is at the back of his kennel laying down in a ball when the handler approaches. Handsome begins to get up and paw at the door, and barking. Handsome is leashed with treats, pulls hard to the behavior office and placed on a drag leash. Handsome is highly social, leans into petting and jumping on the handler in a social manner. Handsome will make attempts to mouth the handlers treat pouch, but will offer a sit when asked. Handsome is brought back to his kennel where he will attempt to leash bite by jumping up and trying to grab it, but is refocused with treats into his kennel.
Summary (7):: 03/05/26: Handsome is standing at the front of his kennel on his hind legs with red dilated pupils appearing very aroused, handler leashes him. He is escorted outside for enrichment. While outside, Handsome repeatedly jumps up on handler, pushing into them and demanding treats in a very forward manner. Handler tosses treats on the ground in front of him, but he immediately returns and continues demanding additional treats. Due to his persistent forward behavior and inability to settle, the session is ended. Handsome is returned to his kennel safely without any further issues. 2/26/26: Handsome is standing in his kennel with a loose and wiggly body as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he has a loose and wiggly body and would constantly jump up on the handler to demand for treats. He would stop in front of the handler and stare to receive treats. He would stare at dogs and people that were nearby and is able to be redirected with a squeaker and treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 02/17/26: Handsome is standing at the front of his kennel on his hind legs with a loose, wiggly body and allows handler to leash him. He pulls strongly on the leash to the behavior room. Once inside, a drag leash is placed on him. Handsome runs around the room, greeting handlers and jumping up, displaying low manners. He eventually engages with the licky mat, consuming all the cheese, and then interacts with a snuffle mat, retrieving all treats inside. When the session is complete, Handsome is returned to his kennel safely without any issue. 2/10/26: Handsome is at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body jumping onto the door as the handler approaches his kennel. He is leashed with treats and will come out of the kennel quickly, pulling hard to the play yard. In the yard, handsome will sniff around and jump up at the handler for treats. The handler will ask him to sit and give him a treat. He will then refocus his attention to sniffing and begins to chew on some ice. The handler will toss snow balls for him to catch. After a while of playing, handsome is returned to his kennel here he is secured safely. 01/20/26 (Assessment Note): Handsome is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is escorted to the assessment room, where a drag leash is placed on him. Handsome explores the room freely and displays fearful behaviors, becoming startled by sudden movements. Despite this, he remains social with handlers and allows all handling. He runs without becoming aroused, does not respond to knocking, and backs away from the toy and dummy hand when presented. Handsome is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. See Behavioral Assessment for additional details.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Handsome is placed in an adult-only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Anxiety,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Handsome is noted to jump up on the handler often.Training should focus on reinforcing calm alternative behaviors, such as sitting for attention, and consistently withholding reinforcement for jumping. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Handsome becomes aroused during interactions, jumping up on handlers and engaging in mouthy behavior. This pattern indicates social hyperarousal and limited bite inhibition, particularly during excited greeting or attention-seeking moments. Training should focus on reinforcing calm engagement, teaching alternative behaviors for attention, and redirecting mouthiness to appropriate outlets to help improve impulse control and safer interactions. Please see the handout on Social hyperarousal and Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety/Fearful: handsome is noted to become avoidant of handlers and will headwhip when touched or attempts are made to collar him. Handsome did take high-value items such as cheese from the handlers. He is also noted to be spooked by loud noise, such as dogs barking in a kennel and spooked from sudeen movemnet. Training should emphasize slow, predictable interactions, choice-based handling, and gradual desensitization to touch, noise, and equipment. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety and decomrpession period. Leash Biting: Handsome began leash biting when being returned to his kennel. The handler was able to redirect him with treats. Please see hanout on Arousal.
