Animal Profile

Little Bean

Hello, my name is Little Bean. My animal id is #217362. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/24/2024.

Little Bean is currently at risk due to behavior concerns. During intake, Little Bean was noted to be jumping up and leash biting. This behavior has remained and intensified throughout his stay at the Care Centers. He has continued to leash bite and at times was unable to be redirected using treats. Little Bean has also been reported to growl as he passes by dogs and cage fights when being removed or returned to his kennel. In kennel, he has recently been observed to become tense, hard stares, hard barks, and low growls at handlers as they approach with enrichment. Little Bean has tolerated handling while at the Care Centers. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am playful and cute! I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Summary (5):: 2/13/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Little Bean is leash biting and super mouthy. 2/8/25- Little Bean was at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body, when handler attempted to leash and Little Bean kept trying to bite at the leash. Handler used a treat to lure and he was finally leashed. He was taken for a street walk. He took treats very hard and handler tossed them. When the handler didn't have a treat in their hand Little Bean kept mouthing their hand seeking more and excessively pulling around. When handler took their phone out Little Bean started to bite at the leash and jump high, going up the leash. Handler had to toss a treat to deter and he he went to eat the treat. He pulled hard and was darting around then will turn to handler being mouthy trying to get more treats. He would do this periodically throughout the walk. He was easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 2/4/25: Little is tense, hard staring, and hard barking at handler as they approach to give out enrichment. He lunges at the kennel door as handler reaches hand out. He begins to low growl briefly, but his body softens when treats are offered. Handler departs interaction. 2/1/25: Little Bean is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with a treat handler offers and taken to the street for a walk. While walking down the hall, Bean pulls hard, but is directed using treats down the stairs and out to the street. Bean is very frantic when walking and pulls hard, he attempts to walk in between handlers legs, turns and zig zags behind handlers back and pulls forward at random points. He will also attempt to pick up random objects he finds on the street and eat them, but will drop them when tossed treats. Bean will attempt to approach people on the street and stops to use the bathroom during his walk. Bean will accept treats from handler who offers with an open palm with light pressure. He is walked for a bit more before being brought back to the shelter. Bean pulls hard going back to kennel but allows clipping, before being returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 1/31/25: It was reported by staff that Little Bean will growl as he passes the dogs. 1/25/25: Little Bean is at the front, methodically barking, bouncing his front paws up and down into the bottom of the door. Handler stands in front of his kennel and offers a treat and Little Bean stops the barking and bouncing. Handler is able to leash him easily with the use of treats. He attempts to cage fight on the way out of the room. He is walked to the street where he walks in front of handler seeking treats. Handler has to toss treat to get him to move and to continue walking forward. HE will sit for treats but is constantly standing of walking in front of handler for treats. He is clipped while eating treats off the floor and returns to kennel without issue. 1/10/25:It was reported on the behavior board that Little Bean leash bites and treats do not work. 12/29/24: Little Bean is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed while distracted with treats which he takes hard and is brought to the street for his walk. Along the way will turn to handler and look at their hands before attempting to jump up at the leash. He is redirected with treats but will continue jumping immediately after taking the treat. He continues this behavior while on the street until halfway through his walk. He walks past people without issue and shows no reaction to dogs when he sees them on the street. He is then brought into the office for an assessment during which he allows collaring and petting while distracted with treats. When taking the treats he remains intense and takes them very hard. He wiggles and squirms around when being pet and after finishing his assessment he is brought back to kennel and returned without further issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Little Bean so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to mouthie behavior and lack of basic manners we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/Leash-biting: During Little Bean's intake, Little Bean jumped on a staff member and began to leash bite. Positive reinforcement should be utilized to help Little Bean learn impulse control. Please see the handouts on Basic manners/poor impulse control and Leash-biting. Mouthiness: Little Bean has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Little Bean to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness.
