Bluno
Hello, my name is Bluno. My animal id is #246854. I am a desexed male tri color dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/4/2026.
Bluno is at risk for behavior reasons. Bluno is deteriorating in care, leash-biting when exiting the room, on walks, and when staff attempt to end a socialization session. He has become increasingly mouthy during his stay. Bluno is otherwise a sweet and social dog who knows a number of basic cues. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

This handsome pup has lots of puppy energy and a fun, playful personality to match. Bluno has been very friendly with staff and enjoys spending time with the people he meets. He's an active dog who would love a home where he can play, explore, and share his enthusiasm for life 🐾💙 Shelter life has been a bit stressful for Bluno, and he has a hard time relaxing in his kennel. Because of this, we know he would thrive in a loving home where he can feel comfortable, get plenty of exercise, and enjoy time with his people 🏡💙

Summary:: 3/16: Bluno approaches a F LMB dog with soft body, wide wagging tail. They greet nose to nose, remaining loose. Bluno ignores a M LMB dog alert barking through a gate.
Summary (4):: 3/30 PM: Bluno is sitting at the front of his kennel as a staff member approaches, and he allows them to leash him, then as they open the door wider, he turns his head and slips out of the loop as he steps out of the kennel. He pauses momentarily, and the handler grabs his collar, then he gives whale eye and attempts to rear up. Another staff member comes quickly and firmly tells him to allow handler to leash him, which distracts him enough for the handler to slip the loop back over his head. Once they secure the leash and let go of the collar, he reaches up to bite the leash briefly, stopping when they shorten the leash. He pulls moderately while exiting the room, trying to kennel fight another male large mixed-breed dog he passes. In the hall, he tries again to grab the leash, and the handler once again shortens it. Once outside, he pulls mildly on his walk, waiting when told "stay" before crossing the street. Across the street, he excitedly sniffs his surroundings, pulling mildly and checking in with handler. Coming back, he allows handler to clip him easily, and eagerly heads into his kennel to eat treats and play with toys. 3/30: Bluno is easily leashed and a treat is tossed ahead of him. He chases the treat and pulls to exit the room. He is rope-harnessed at the top of the ramp. He checks in with his handler often and is rewarded. He begins to offer behavior while on the walk, sitting down, pawing and lying down on the sidewalk. He is coaxed along and they continue on the walk. He pulls back to the kennel. 3/29 Bluno is jumping at the kennel door as staff arrive. He is leashed and brought to the yard, pulling hard on the way out. A drag leash is secured to him, and he explores for a bit, running around the yard, ignoring staff. He is very energetic in the yard, moving fast. When it is time to return, he grabs staff's rope and is at first ignoring treats to let go of it, attempting to play tug-of-war. When staff finally ropes Bluno, he begins rope biting, and jumping at the rope, also making it difficult to remove the drag leash. Bluno does eventually take a treat, allowing staff to clip the rope and lead him inside. He goes into his kennel and barks as the interaction ends.
Summary (5):: 3/28 Bluno is at the front of his kennel when staff approaches. Before the leash is secured the first time in his kennel, he whips his head around and throws the loop off himself. He is then releashed and brought out. On the walk out of adoptions, he turns to face the handler, but then walks with him as soon as the handler is next to him. Bluno is brought out to the yard where he rubs up against the handler with a soft body. The handler throws a tennis ball, and he chases it, picks it up and walks back with it and lies down and chews on it. Later, he hops up next to the handler on the bench and leans into them with a soft body, accepting pets. While releashing he bites the rope a couple of times but doesn't hold or tug. Bluno is then easily returned to his kennel. 3/24 Bluno is jumping up and down in his kennel, wagging his tail and barking. When going to leash Bluno, he had an open mouth, and his teeth grazed the staff member's hand as the leash was placed over his head. Once leashed, Bluno ran down the hall, pulling very hard. Outside, Bluno was jumpy and hyperactive. He randomly stopped to stare at the staff and then suddenly pulled hard in the other direction. He was taken around the building and then brought to the yard. He noticed a dog in the other yard and was very focused on it. After throwing some treats, his attention was brought back to the staff. Bluno is highly treat-motivated and would sit and lift his arm to give paw when shown a treat. After some time outside, Bluno was leashed and brought back to his kennel with no issue. 3/21 Bluno is easily leashed and brought out to the hallway. He was clipped to be brought to holding first, but then was brought out on a short walk. While being unclipped, Bluno becomes aroused and spins fast and rolls sideways into staff's legs with a soft body but high energy. He gets up and is taken out on the walk. On the walk he periodically charges to the end of his leash pulling hard when he does, otherwise walking with some slack. He relieves himself then is taken back to his temporary kennel in holding with no issues.
Summary (6):: 3/16: Bluno is reported to have taken a high value treat very roughly from staff member. 3/15 PM Bluno is at the front of his kennel as staff approaches. He is easily leashed and brought through the adoption room, turning back briefly at the door to meet and greet but redirected to continue. Handler brings him on a small walk around the building, then into the yard. In the yard, he is slightly tense when handler attaches the drag leash, and shows some interest in a treat-dispensing ball. Handler then tries various cues to see which ones he knows: sit, paw, down, stay, come, and possibly beg. He does not know speak or roll over. Handler praises him and gives treats and he becomes noticeably more relaxed, loose, and wiggly. Handler sits on the bench and he runs over to lean into them with high fast wagging tail, soliciting and enjoying petting. He climbs into their lap and keeps trying to lick their ear or face. He then gets down and explores the yard some, and handler uses treats to lure him up and down the agility ramp (with the cue "ramp") which he picks up quickly. He is easily leashed and brought back to his kennel with no trouble, although he does slightly bite at his leash when handler is slipping it off of him in the kennel. 3/15 AM Bluno is at the front of his kennel on approach with a soft body. He is easily leashed and then brought to meet and greet, ignoring the other kennels. He allows staff to rope harness and he is brought on a walk. On the walk, he walks nicely with some slack on the leash for the most part, only pulling lightly to a couple of scents. Bluno is easily returned to his kennel.
Summary (7):: 3/14 PM Bluno was jumping in the kennel when staff approached, and was easily leashed. He tried to look in kennels while walking past, but staff redirected him easily. Staff took him on a walk, and he walked with mild pulling, tail high and ears upright, occasionally stopping to look at the handler with ears in neutral position and face slightly tense. He was interested in cars driving past and kept turning to watch them go. Upon returning to kennel, he looked inside, balked, and turned to grab the squeaker from a stuffed toy he had destroyed earlier. He was redirected back to the kennel and had to be nudged in, then tried to push his way out as staff was trying to close the door. He then jumped up and bit the leash for a second or two, releasing it when staff slackened their hold. Staff was then able to close and lock the door, and bring him a sturdy stuffed toy as he had no toys in his kennel. He promptly destroyed the stuffed toy, and staff gave him a Nylabone and a rope toy. 3/14 AM Bluno was leashed easily and taken on a walk with loose leash, accepting pets as we walked. Bluno was then taken to the yard, where he explored the yard and played with a toy. Bluno was then taken to their kennel without issue. 3/10 Bluno is sitting at front of kennel and easily leashed and taken on a walk. Bluno walked with a loose leash and accepts pets from staff. Bluno was then taken to the yard and explored the yard and played with toys. Staff then took Bluno back to kennel with no issues. 3/8: Bluno is easily leashed and brought to the yard for his assessment. He has a relaxed body and an open mouth. He accepts pets from both staff members. After his assessment, he displays some mouthy behavior, mouthing towards their hands when being pet. He returns without issue. 3/4: Bluno is easily leashed and brought on a walk. He has a relaxed body and pulls hard on and off. He accepts treats offered and is clipped without issue. He balks before returning to kennel. Once in the kennel, he barked at staff member.

Summary:: A little anxious in kennel, friendly during PE, high energy, allowed handling with gentle restraint
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to potential challenges, we recommend a home with no children at this time
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Bluno finds food, treats, and random items of a high value. He is reported to become tense and hover over them. We recommend Bluno be left alone when eating. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of his mouth. Should you have to remove something from Bluno, we recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Mouthiness/Poor Bite Inhibition: Bluno has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Bluno’s teeth make contact with skin). Please see handout on Mouthiness and Poor Bite Inhibition. Anxiety: Bluno appears anxious at the care center, shredding bedding, digging into his kuranda bed. If Bluno displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. Strength/Leash Pulling; Bluno is a strong dog who pulls on and off during walks. He can pull hard. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward-based training to not pull while on leash. Please see the handout on Leash Manners.
