Animal Profile

Rex

Hello, my name is Rex. My animal id is #239520. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/10/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.

Rex is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Rex has shown high arousal and fixation around food, including repeatedly jumping at and pushing into handlers' treat pouches and grabbing onto clothing. Rex responds well to training and has shown improvement with leave-it and disengagement work, successfully redirecting from treat pouches and other dogs when cued, but is struggling to regulate his arousal on his own in the care center. Medically, Rex is apparently healthy.

I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

In the office, he displays a tense body when the handler collars him. He takes treats from the handler but will remain tense and with a high tail and high hackles. Due to these behaviors, a handling assessment will not be condcuted at this time. 06/12/26: During Rex's behavioral assessment, he will approach and smell the assessor and display a tight muzzle, tense body with high hackles and a high tail he is quickly moved away due to this. He is taken back to his kennel and given more time to decompress. 11/04/25: Behavioral assessment upon request. 10/18/25: Behavioral assessment upon request.

Summary:: According to Rex's previous owner(s), he is tolerant, playful, friendly, and outgoing with familiar and unfamiliar dogs both on and off leash. 7/29/26: Rex greets two familiar dogs, one intact male and one spayed female, and engages in rough and rowdy play. He is a vocal player, growling with an open mouth while remaining loose with mid level wags. He frequently stands on his hind legs, tackles the other dogs, and mouths their ears/faces. He is tolerant of rough play in return and continues to seek out interaction. 06/13/26 Rex is introduced to a novel female while on a loose leash (did not tolerate collaring). Rex approaches with a neutral frame and loose wagging tail. Due to the female's discomfort, the interaction is kept to a gate greet at this time. Previous Stay 2025: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. Came in with another dog. Information on how they interact is unknown. 10/20/25 Rex is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Rex will initially approach the gate loose bodied, offering bounces before allowing the female dog into his pen for a face-to-face interaction. Rex and the female dog will approach each other exuberantly upon contact, sniffing each other and immediately exchanging a series of paw slaps. Rex will also place his paw on the female dog's shoulder periodically soliciting play, attempting to initiate chase play. They will engage in some chase play, making minimal body contact. As they chase each other around, Rex will attempt to mount the female dog and is moved away from one of the handlers present. Rex and the female dog are separated, Gollum shakes off and is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (2):: 10/22/26 (Trainer Note): Rex is jumping up on the door of his kennel repeatedly as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls hard outside. Rex rushes back and forth and jumps repeatedly up onto the handler, attempting to steal treats from the handler's treat pouch. He is unable to refocus. The handler attempts to work with him on engage/ disengage and he continues to rush back and forth, occasionally spinning one direction or the other, and jumping up onto the handler. He displays dilated pupils, pinned ears, and a heavy pant for the duration of the interaction. The handler abandons attempts to train and Rex pulls hard back to kennel. 10/18/26 (Trainer Note): Rex is standing at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately outside. Rex will jump at the handler's treat pouch and will leave it on verbal cue. Regardless, he jumps up intermittently throughout the session. Rex readily plays engage/ disengage, turning away from dogs at first as soon as he is marked and then without prompting. He leans into contact from the handler with a soft body. The handler works with him on touch and the 123 game. Rex will respond and then attempt to steal treats. He is walked back to kennel without issue.

When the third playmate, whom Rex also already knows, enters the yard, they will also join in the body to body contact. Once the session is concluded, Rex will be brought back to his kennel safely without any issues. For more information, see Dog to Dog assessment 09/24/26 (Trainer Note): Rex is standing at the front of his kennel and begins to jump at the door as handler moves to unlock the door. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out to the street. Once on the street he jumps up at handler quickly grabbing the pocket of their sweatshirt at which point handler uses defensive handling to keep him from latching on. He is easily redirected after with treats and handler has Rex do some Up/Down to help calm him down. Handler continues rewarding calm behavior while they walk to a spot on the street to work near another ACC dog in training. Handler works on E/D level 2 while about 15 feet from the other dog. Rex shows some interest but readily reengages with handler without any prompting. Every so often he will jump up at handler but without any mouthing, handler uses defensive handling to keep him off their body. Rex does well walking back to the kennel, handler uses treat trail to keep him from reacting while walking through the kennel and he does very well. He is returned to kennel with no issue. 09/15/26 (Trainer Note): Rex is standing at the front of kennel with a loose body as handler approaches. He begins to jump on the door as the lock is unlocked, but is easily leashed using the bulls-eye method and a treat. Rex darts out his kennel and pulls very hard to the street, regularly turning around towards the handler and using their leg as a jumping board. Handler begins rewarding calm behavior, and using both the 123 and the "touch" cue, he is receptive and readily participates. He is taken to the park for a training session and agility course. Handler continues working on ED as another dog works on the agility course across the basketball court. Rex is able to complete the course following a food lure. Rex remains loose bodied throughout interaction and leans in for pets briefly. He is returned to his kennel without issue.

Rex sees another dog and stares, but turns back towards the handler as soon as he is reinforced. He resumes attempting to steal treats and launching off the handler and is now running frenetically back and forth before doing so. The handler reinforces him for sitting and plays the up/ down game with him. He responds and settles some, but is not able to breathe or go without management. Rex passes another dog and pulls towards them but is easily redirected. He pulls hard back to kennel and enters the kennel without issue.

Rex pulls hard towards pigeons if able to stare for too long, and then when coming back to handler, he bounds off the handler's body. Handler works on engage/disengage game with Rex around pigeons and rewarded for calm behavior. Handler increases rate of reinforcement to keep Rex from escalating with the pigeons which was successful. Rex is energetic but manageable walking back and returns to kennel with no issue. 07/02/26 (Trainer Note): Rex is standing at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. He allows the handler to attach a drag leash and explores the room with a loose body and sweeping tail wag. Date of intake:: 6/10/2026

Date of initial:: 6/11/2026

Summary:: timid, whale eyes, lifts lip and shows teeth but allowed for all handling and task with muzzle

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Rex be placed in an adult-only home at this time. No cats: We reccomend Rex is placed in a home without small animals due to him trying to chase squirrels and pigeons.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: In the prior home, Rex is noted to relieve himself outside during walks but may have indoor accidents a few times a week.This suggests partial house-training consistency and may benefit from increased structure, supervision, and reinforcement of appropriate elimination behaviors. Please see the handout on House soiling. Low threshold for arousal/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During Rex medical exam he is note to become timid, whale eyes, lifts lip and shows teeth but allowed for all handling and task with muzzle. During Rex's behavioral assessment, he will approach and smell the assessor and display a tight muzzle, tense body with high hackles and a high tail he is quickly moved away due to this. This pattern suggests underlying fear that may escalate defensively when he feels unsafe or pressured.Please see the handout on arousal and Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Strength/leash pulling/On-leash reactivity: During a borough break, Rex was reported to become reactive to other large dogs and people running. He pulls hard on the leash towards other dog and shows body tension, but does not bark or growl.To manage Rex's strong pulling and reactivity toward large dogs and runners, use a front-clip harness for better control and begin reinforcing loose-leash walking with frequent rewards. Practice counterconditioning by rewarding calm behavior when he sees triggers at a safe distance. Gradually decrease that distance as he becomes more comfortable. Redirect his focus with cues like “watch me” and avoid high-traffic areas during early training stages. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
