Hello, my name is Ella. My animal id is #226351. I am a desexed female tortoiseshell cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/5/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.

Ella is at at-risk for behavior reasons. It was reported that Ella is friendly and outgoing in her previous home. However, she is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. Medically, Ella is apparently healthy.

Behavior Condition: 5. Red

Behavior upon intake: Ella was crouched in her carrier with dilated pupils. When staff opened the carrier she remained frozen until staff tilted the carrier approximately 30 degrees, then she slowly stepped into the kennel and crouched there. After staff closed the kennel door, she remained frozen, and growled quietly when staff neared the door a couple minutes later.

She will struggle and squirm when being placed in a carrier. Ella is an affectionate indoor cat who spent most of her time relaxing in the living room. She enjoys gentle play, especially with soft toys, and received interactive playtime multiple times each month. Ella has a preference for scratching on carpeted or fabric surfaces, particularly the couch. She eats wet food, favoring chicken and tuna flavors, and especially enjoys tuna as a treat. Her previous owner described her as a loving companion with no behavioral issues, noting her sweet personality and love for soft toys and tasty treats.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 05.06 Ella is hissing and spitting upon approach from behind her shoreline cover. When it is slowly lifted, she swats again and hissing from the top of her den. The shoreline is dropped, and Ella hisses again, leaving punctures in cover. Sneeze guards are put up to prevent incident. 5/23/25: Ella lets out a low growl upon seeing staff. She hisses and lunges at staff as her kennel is quickly tended to. She does not allow staff to get near her during the interaction, and she does not move from her position. Ella maintains a tense posture. Treats are left for her to eat later. 07.07.25 Ella growls, hisses and spits when staff walks by her kennel. 07.15 Ella can be heard hissing and spitting from behind her kennel covers. As staff walk around the room servicing other kennels, Ella hisses and swats whenever she is passed. Her sneeze guard is lifted, and she is at the front of her kennel with dilated pupils, flat ears. Ella is offered slow blinks, her ears flatten, and she begins to growl and swat as the sneeze guard is placed back down. 07.22 Ella is hiding in her den upon approach. The den covered is lifted slowly and Ella swats and spits. She is left alone to prevent FAS. 7.24 AM-Ella is sitting in the middle of her kennel when approached. She hisses and swats at staff before moving through the transfer door, allowing staff to clean her kennel. 7.24 Afternoon- An unfamiliar staff member approaches her kennel and slowly sits down on the floor, slow blinking. Ella approaches the kennel door with a soft body and begins to eat her dry food with the staff member sitting next to her. They retrieve a squeeze up and are able to give her the treat through the kennel door and Ella remains soft the whole time. She allows brief touching on her nose as she is eating the squeeze up and interaction is then over.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Ella can be heard growling from behind her shorline cover. When it is lifted she spits and swats. She continues to spit, growl and hiss while assessor stand in front of her kennel offering slow blinks. Ella is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch and bite is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
