Slips
Hello, my name is Slips. My animal id is #249438. I am a male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 3/12/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too active.
Slips is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. What my friends at ACC say about me: Slips has made some very nice improvements since his first assessment and now enjoys petting and is friendly, sweet, and affectionate, but remains a level three cat mostly because of bite history in the home. Due to prior owner history (see separate notes) and a bite/scratch history we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home. A volunteer writes: I spent some time with Mr. Slips today, and now that he's more adjusted to the Care Center, he seems like a totally different cat than his earlier notes state: I found him to be playful, gentle, and a lover of any and all human interaction. This handsome youngster waited patiently for me to approach his kennel, and when I did he greeted me with some hearty meows and an invitation to bat around a feather toy. He took a break to munch some chow, then lay down on his side and rolled around to reveal his belly, a sign of trust. Slips really is a fan of humans, and the perfect new pet parent for him is someone who keeps a pile of toys on hand and gives him one-on-one time. He's the kind of cat who will cheer you up when you're feeling blue, listen to you when you talk about your day, and never turn down the opportunity to just hang and enjoy your company. Meet this handsome boy at the Manhattan Care Center today!

Simba started staring at her and described his eyes as dilated and turning black. He lunged at her in the attack. ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/13/26 FB32 Lying down in loaf position in litter box with neutral body and eyes. Squints/flinches when opening the door. Allows brief petting on the head but then retreats into the den to hide. He appropriately eliminated in the litter box. 3/15/26 Vol. Slips did not come out of his den. He ate the flaked chicken I put in the den. He sniffed at the scratcher but backed up when I tried to pet him. He did poke his head out of the den once I removed the scratcher, and his face was soft/neutral. 3/19/26 Vol. Poking his head out of the den when I approached kennel. He hissed when the kennel door was opened. Initially swatted at the clicker with Squeeze-ups but then calmed down enough to eat two. Tentatively swatted at the cat dancer. Gave him some tuna to lure him out of the den but he never came out. Left the dish in his den. 3/21/26 ACFR Slips was lying down in a loaf position inside his den. He flinches when kennel door is opened but slowly peeks his head out. He remains in den but quickly eats squeeze up from scratcher tool before returning to den. Allows brief chin scratches with scratcher then hisses shortly and turns away. 3/25/26 FB73 Slips is laying in his den, hissing as the handler slowly lifts the den cover, backing away and pressing his body close to the back corner. He begins to low growl but stops after he is softly spoken to for a short while. He allows the handler to slowly slide a squeeze up in a tray towards him and he leans forward, sniffing at it but not eating it. When he is softly spoken to, he eventually settles and lays in a curled-up position, still keeping himself close to the back of the den but now returning soft eye contact to the handler. The handler is able to slowly lift the den door and he hesitantly comes forward, sniffing at the handler's hand and allowing a brief pet on the head before pulling away. 3/28/26 Vol. Mostly in den when approached, spoken to and door opened. Has head through the den opening but went all the way back inside den if approached with a scratcher tool. Sniffed dry treats offered on scratcher tool. I left treats inside den. Pretty sure the treats were ignored. Offered lickable treat in a tray outside of den and then on a scratcher tool near the den opening. Sniffed and ate the lickable treat. If stepped away from kennel he will step halfway out the den to eat the lickable treat in tray. At times he is peering his head out of the den box or he’s completely inside, but you see his whiskers from front of kennel. 3/29/26 Vol. Slips stayed in his den. He was very congested, which is possibly why he wasn’t interested any of the treats I offered him. When I offered him a treat, he swatted at me (no claws). GAN FOR CONTINUATION
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Calm,Sweet,Affectionate,Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Slips is noted to defecate outside the litterbox; however, these accidents are most likely the result of the stressful and high-traffic environment with the young adults, cats, and kittens in the home (see Known History above for more details). We advise potential adopters to be aware that this behavior may continue in a home environment, and that they be comfortable with management and modification techniques for this behavioral challenge. For the past 3 days in shelter, he as appropriately eliminated in the litter box and there were no accidents reported. Please note we have been montoring his litter box use for some time and he is not defecating outside the box.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Adult only home and no other cats due to fearfulness, bite/scratch history, and potential for inappropriate elimination or redirected aggression from other cats in the home.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Slips has made some very nice improvements since his first assessment and now enjoys petting and is friendly, sweet, and affectionate, but remains a level three cat mostly because of bite history in the home. Due to prior owner history (see separate notes) and a bite/scratch history we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home.
