Slips
Hello, my name is Slips. My animal id is #249438. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 3/12/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too active.
Slips is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. A volunteer writes: I spent some time with Mr. Slips today, and now that he's more adjusted to the Care Center, he seems like a totally different cat than his earlier notes state: I found him to be playful, gentle, and a lover of any and all human interaction. This handsome youngster waited patiently for me to approach his kennel, and when I did he greeted me with some hearty meows and an invitation to bat around a feather toy. He took a break to munch some chow, then lay down on his side and rolled around to reveal his belly, a sign of trust. Slips really is a fan of humans, and the perfect new pet parent for him is someone who keeps a pile of toys on hand and gives him one-on-one time. He's the kind of cat who will cheer you up when you're feeling blue, listen to you when you talk about your day, and never turn down the opportunity to just hang and enjoy your company. Meet this handsome boy at the Manhattan Care Center today!

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
Spay/Neuter status: No
Date of Intake: 3/5/2026
Is this cat having litter box issues?: Yes
If yes, Please elaborate:: Slips is noted to defecate outside the litterbox. The accidents began 1 1/2 years ago. He shared two uncovered litterboxes with non-clumping litter, with 1 adult male (not neutered), two adult females (not spayed), and two six-week-old kittens. The litterbox was scooped twice a day. The previous owner tried to modify the behavior by scooping more often, but does not know why he is having accidents. Slips was not taken to the vet for this issue.
Basic Information:: Slips is an approximately 4 y/o male, not neutered, not declawed, DSH. He has never received any veterinary care. His previous owner got him from a friend when he was a kitten and surrendered him due to his aggression.
Previously lived with:: 1 Adult, 2 Teenagers, 5 Cats
How is this cat around strangers?: Noted to hiss, growl, swat, and nip.
How is this cat around children?: Noted to hiss and have bitten the 18 y/o female who lived in the home. Noted to be tolerant of the 19 y/o male who lived in the home.
How is this cat around other cats?: Noted to hiss, growl, bite, chase, and corner his son, Simba, A# 249444, not neutered. Noted to be tolerant of the two adult females, not spayed, and (2) 6-week-old kittens that he lived with.
How is this cat around dogs?: No experience noted.
Behavior Notes: Slips' nails have never been trimmed. He struggles and attempts to bite when picked up or held. He hisses when brushing his coat. It is unknown how he will react when placed in a carrier. The one time he went in the carrier, he walked in on his own.
Bite history:: March 6, 2026, 10 am: Simba was secured in the bathroom. The previous owner's 18 y/o daughter was brushing her teeth. Simba started staring at her and described his eyes as dilated and turning black. He lunged at her in the attack. She was able to run out of the bathroom and close the door with Simba still inside, avoiding a bite/scratch incident. February 22, 2026, evening: When the previous owner opened the bathroom door, Simba ran out. Slips attacked Simba, biting him on his front, left leg, resulting in an open wound with bleeding. Slips chased Simba into the bathroom. The previous owner was able to close the door, preventing Slips from going in. Simba was not injured. The previous owner was unable to afford vet care. April 4th 2025, at 11:44 pm: The previous owner's daughter was standing next to Slips as he was trying to mount one of the female cats. She told Slips no, move. Slips then scratched her multiple times on her left arm, resulting in bleeding. The victim did not seek medical attention. The owner did self-care at home. Slips was not injured and did not require vet care.
Energy level/descriptors:: Low
For a New Family to Know: Slips is described as a solitary, independent cat. He had access to inside his previous home and spent most of his time in the living room. He never got interactive playtime and does not like to play. He scratches on carpet/fabric surfaces. He eats 9 Lives dry and wet food and loves all kinds of treats. He had access to two uncovered litterboxes, non-clumping litter, one in the bathroom and the second in the living room.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Indoor Cat Previously lived with: 1 Adult, 2 Teenagers, 3 other cats, 2 kittens Behavior toward strangers: Noted to be defensive (hiss, growl, swat, and nip). Behavior toward children: Noted to be defensive with the 18 y/o female and tolerated the 19 y/o male. Behavior toward cats: Noted to defensive with his son Simba. Noted to be tolerant of the two adult females, not spayed, and two, 6-week-old kittens. Bite or Scratch history: Yes, reported. Litter box training: Slips has a reported history of defecating outside the litterbox, with the behavior beginning approximately 1.5 years ago in his previous home. The behavior most likely occurred in response to the stressful and high-traffic household environment, which included multiple adult cats, young kittens, and frequent activity. The previous owner attempted to address the behavior by increasing litterbox cleaning frequency, but no veterinary evaluation was pursued to investigate potential medical or behavioral contributors. Potential adopters should be aware that inappropriate elimination may reoccur in a home environment and should be comfortable implementing appropriate management and behavior-modification strategies if needed. Since entering the shelter, Slips has been closely monitored for litterbox use. During this time, he has consistently defecated appropriately in the litterbox, and no accidents have been observed or reported, including over the past several days of monitoring. Energy level/descriptors: Low energy level Other notes: Handling and Lifestyle History - Slips is described as a solitary, independent cat who spent most of his time indoors in the living room of his previous home. He reportedly has limited tolerance for handling, struggling and attempting to bite when picked up or restrained, and hissing during grooming. His nails have never been trimmed. His behavior in a carrier is largely unknown, although he reportedly entered a carrier voluntarily on one occasion. Slips did not receive regular interactive play sessions in his previous home and was described as showing little interest in toys or play. He prefers scratching carpeted or fabric surfaces and is highly food-motivated, readily enjoying a variety of treats.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT 3/15/26: Slips was curled up hiding at the back of the den with a tense body and wide eyes. He sniffs treats offered by hand but then leans back when reaching close. He flattens his ears and lip licks when pet on the head and receiving cheek rubs. When stroking his body, he remains tenses with his tail wrapped tight around his body and then he looks back at the assessor's hand and hisses. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. -5/16/26 Slips has made some very nice improvements since his first assessment and now enjoys petting and is friendly, sweet, and affectionate, but remains a level three cat mostly because of bite history in the home. Slips enjoys coming forward for treats and returns slow blinks but is still hesitant to pets and resists handling. 3/31/26 Vol. Sitting near the front of his kennel. Opened door and was able to pet him by hand for several minutes. He head-butted my hand and then rolled over and exposed his belly to me. Wasn’t interested in eating Squeeze-ups or in playing with the cat dancer; he just wanted more petting. He did get a bit overstimulated with the petting so I ended our interaction to avoid FAS.Sweet boy! 4/1/26 Seems to be under the weather. Allows hand pets and head bunts back. Ignores offered treats and remains in the main compartment. 4/2/26 FB20 Slips is laying in the main area of his kennel looking under the weather. He sniffs hand briefly and allows a cheek rub before using his paw to press hand away, not into interaction today. 4/3/26 Vol. Sitting erect on shelf, looking around - gave a little peep when came to read kennel card. Put in treat bowl and saw that Slips had thrown up fluid all around cage. Decided not to interact - he continued to sit erect. Cleaned up his cage. 4/5/26 Vol. Slips is still a little under the weather, but he was a bit more social this week. He was sitting upright in his litter box. I put a tray with tuna in front of the box and closed the cubby door. Slips came forward to eat the tuna, then went into the main kennel to eat some dry food. After eating, he went back into the litter box and sat in loaf. He tolerated a gentle head pet but scrunched backward shortly after because there was a lot of noise in the room. 04/06/26 FB47 Slips was in the cubby sleeping and, when woken up, began salivating and appeared fearful. Treats were left, and the interaction was ended. But a few minutes later vet services went to do work with him in the cubby and he tolerated it without hissing. 4/8/26 Resting in the cubby. Allows pets and head bunts the hand. Ignores offered treats.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Shy ,Calm,Sweet,Affectionate,Curious,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Rough play,Uncomfortable with pick up,Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Bite or Scratch History: Two Reported Incidents 1. Redirected aggression: While attempting to mount a female cat, Slips was interrupted by a household member. Slips then scratched the person's arm multiple times. The injuries were treated at home and no medical care was sought. 2. Inter-cat aggression: Slips attacked Simba (resident cat) after Simba exited a bathroom, biting his front left leg and causing an open wound. Slips chased Simba into the bathroom and the incident ended when the door was closed, preventing further contact. **Behavior Summary:** Reported behaviors include redirected aggression toward a person during an interaction with another cat and aggression directed toward another cat resulting in injury. These incidents suggest challenges with arousal, impulse control, and interactions involving people and other animals.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Slips was alert and curious upon approach, calmly scanning his surroundings. He engaged cautiously and accepted offered treats but remained somewhat hesitant, occasionally retreating. He tolerated petting with a scratcher tool, leaning his head and body into the contact. However, when hand petting was attempted while he was eating treats, he leaned away, indicating some discomfort with closer interaction. The session was ended on a positive note to minimize stress and reinforce positive associations with human interaction. Slips tolerates attention and petting but may feel fearful or stressed in the shelter environment and could be intimidated by small children. He tends to be a bit more independent and might need time to adjust and warm up to a new home. Based on his behavior at the care center and prior owner history, he would likely thrive best in an experienced, adult-only household.
