Animal Profile

Ella

Hello, my name is Ella. My animal id is #214640. I am a desexed female brown brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 4 months old.

I came into the shelter as a returns on 1/30/2025.

Ella is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in the shelter and in her previous home. Ella in care has displayed a significant amount of reactivity towards dogs and strangers. Ella has been observed to lunge and hard bark at strangers on walks in care and in her previous home, and in care has began to kennel fight attempting to bite other dogs paws when being removed from kennel, making it difficult to handler her safely at times. Medically, Ella is apparently healthy.

Ella is a sensitive and intelligent pup enrolled in our Shelter Scholars program, where she's working on building confidence and developing positive behaviors to manage anxiety and on-leash reactivity. Through structured enrichment, confidence-building exercises, and stress-reducing activities, Ella is learning how to feel more secure in new environments and remain calm when encountering other dogs or distractions on walks. Using positive reinforcement training, she's making great strides in practicing loose-leash walking, redirecting her focus, and developing trust in her handlers. What my friends at ACC say about me: I need a home where there are no other dogs. I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am playful and cute! A volunteer writes: Tiron and Ella are an unlikely duo, like peanut butter and pickles or Snoop Dog and Martha Stewart, but somehow they manage to be one of the cutest pairs around. Tiron channels a priest who can read oracles and I'm afraid if I look beyond those wispy eyebrows into his dark eyes for too long he'll will discover all my secrets. And Ella, less otherworldly, but equally as hypnotizing eyes, in a sweeter, more worrisome, slightly sadder way. Both dogs are excited to show us their repertoire of tricks...eager for the treats we have to offer, and enjoy their time out of the kennel. Tiron is a bit more outgoing, Ella more reserved, but both perfect companions to have on walks. Tiron and Ella were surrendered when their guardian was evicted and on their way to a shelter. Both dogs are reported to love car rides, know the cues sit, down, stop and go to bed. They "love to be where their people are." Both dogs would do best as the only dog in the home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding-Ella will resource guard food with other dogs by growling. To address Ella's resource guarding, start by feeding her and other dogs in separate areas to prevent immediate conflicts and reduce stress. Gradually desensitize her by having the other dog at a distance and rewarding her with high-value treats when she remains calm. Slowly decrease the distance over time. Teach her commands like "leave it" and "place" to help manage her behavior during mealtimes. Establish a structured feeding routine and occasionally hand-feed her to build trust. using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage progress. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Anxiety- Ella anxiety, displayed through lip licking and whinig needs to be addressed to improve his overall well-being. Ella also esclated to lunging/hard barking at a stranger in her previous adoptive home Identify and minimize exposure to anxiety-inducing situations whenever possible. Create a calm and safe environment for Ella, using techniques like providing a designated quiet space and using calming aids such as pheromone diffusers or anxiety wraps. Gradually expose Ella to potentially stressful situations in a controlled manner, pairing these exposures with treats and positive reinforcement to build positive associations. Consistent use of these techniques will help reduce Ella anxiety over time. Please see the handout on the Decompression period and generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Strength/leash pulling- IN care Ella is reported to Kennel fight and Ella will hard bark, growl, lunge, and snap at other familiar and unfamiliar dogs on/off leash. Begin by exposing Ella to other dogs from a distance where she remains calm, rewarding her for focusing on you and staying relaxed. Gradually decrease the distance over time while continuing to reward calm behavior. Teach Ella alternative behaviors, such as focusing on you or performing a "sit" command when she sees another dog. Consistent training sessions and positive reinforcement will help reduce Ella reactivity and improve her behavior on walks. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Strength/leash pulling.
