Animal Profile

Ginger

Hello, my name is Ginger. My animal id is #155936. I am a desexed female torbie cat at the . The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 4 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/13/2022, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Ginger is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is having a hard time adjusting to the care center and sometimes displays conflicting behaviors. She spends most of her time hiding in the den and will accept gentle attention with a slow approach, but when she feels uncomfortable she swipes defensively. She accepts treats sometimes, but other times she is too wary and cautious. Due to her stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Her previous family reports she is shy for days but will eventually become affectionate and loving.

I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! Please check here for updated adoption hours.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/18/22 Lying on top of kuranda bed, body slightly tense and low and ears forward. Eyes are wide. She softens today when petting is attempted and begins to lean in while rolling gently over onto her side. She remains on her bed where she feels safest. I reward her with treats and sweet talk. Has potential! 10/20/22 Hunched on top of kuranda bed, ears forward and tail curled around feet. Her eyes are slightly wide, her pupils dilated and she looks around the room as the kennel door opens. She allows petting along her head and body while leaning in gently and pausing to looking around the room. I give her some treats and speak to her softly and she continues to lean in gently for all her pets. Nervous and wary of the room, but appreciative of human interaction. Sweet girl - needs help building kitty confidence. 11/2/22 Very sweet, just a little shy and shut down. She is laying in her litter box with body and face neutral and ears forward. When I offer my hand she ducks her head down but accepts and leans into head and cheek pets. Seems appreciative of the attention as well! Shows no interest in the dry treats or squeeze ups I offer so I just spend some time sitting with her and sweet talking while petting. 11/06/22 Lying in back of kennel, body and face slightly tense with head lowered onto kennel floor. Ginger tolerated some gentle petting on her head while remaining still and tilting her ears further. She does not eat the treats offered at this time. 11/09/22 Lying on top of kuranda bed, body low and ears forward. She eats the treat offered, then leans in for petting along her head and back with the scratcher tool while raising her rear and rubbing her cheeks all over it. I try coaxing her off of her bed with more treats but she watches me while continuing to scent mark her bedding. She remains where she feels more comfortable... did well today! 11/10/22 Laying on top of kuranda bed with neutral body and ears forward. he leans into my hand to head bunt for pets. She leans in for cheek and head pets and even lifts rear and tail when pet along her back. Seems to be making improvements, may be ready for re-eval soon once she feels comfortable coming down from kuranda bed! 11/13/22 Recently moved to another room so she's hiding inside a den. She will poke her head out when coaxed and rubs on the den walls, but I could not coax her out. She will allow gentle petting on the head and cheeks, closing her eyes, but remains inside the den. No interest in treats offered. 11/19/22 Hiding in den, I offer chicken on the scratcher tool and she pokes her head out and isn't interested and goes back in. I speak softly to try and coax her out and she sticks her nose in one of the den holes and lets me pet it. When I use the tool to offer dry treats at the den opening she hisses and swats hard. Possibly deteriorating. Notes continued in GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,Curious,Timid

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: New home adjustment period,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Ginger was lying on top of her kuranda bed as the assessor approached, body low and face neutral, head resting on bed floor. Ginger made eye contact when spoken to, expression neutral, then she raised her head and looked around the room as the kennel door opened. Ginger tolerated petting along her head and back while leaning in gently, squinting her eyes and licking her lips. Ginger is sweet but is currently displaying some conflicted behaviors. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Upon re-assessment, although Ginger has shown signs of improvement and leaning enthusiastically for pets and soliciting petting- at this time she has a limited threshold for petting. She is laying in her hidey spot with her eyes alert and ears forward. When the assessor offers their hand she dips her head down and allows petting along her head and cheeks, leaning in at times. After about 25-30 seconds she looks up and turns her head quickly to look at the assessor's hand and swats but does not break skin. Ginger tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she would do best in an experienced, adult only home that can understand her boundaries and give her the time and space to warm up and show that potential she has.
