Animal Profile

Fudge

Hello, my name is Fudge. My animal id is #239966. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 9 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 10/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - too fearful.

Fudge is on the at-risk list due to behavior.She is an under socialized adult cat and is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized and fearful cat adjust to strangers and new environments.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Fudge wants YOU to play with her! She may start out as a wallflower, but you can win her over with playtime and treats. She particularly enjoys chasing string and cat wands, and loves to race around and stretch her long legs. Fudge likes a calm environment so she can get her 8-hour naps in, belly-up with leggies stretched out. She's always watching for birds/toys/treats with wide, pumpkin-colored eyes. Give her the time and space to feel comfortable and safe, and she will open up to you. My foster writes: Fudge, like so many of us, struggles with trust issues. She hasn't had the easiest start in life, and is only just starting to enjoy the comforts of life indoors with human company. With some time and patience, you'll get to see the other side of Fudge; she loves to play with cat wands and other dangly delights, and enjoys watching birds and squirrels on TV. When she gets really comfortable, she sleeps belly-up, stretching her little legs as far as she can. Fudge is a cat who likes her moments of solitude, and would be very grateful for window perches, a hidey-hole or two, and a covered litter box. That being said, in her bravest and most relaxed moments, she enjoys gentle scritches on the chin and head. Fudge would do well in a quiet, adult-only home, ideally as an only child or with a cat sibling who can show her the ropes and help her get more comfortable with indoor life.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: 2/16/26 Bite or Scratch history: Fudge was found in the bathroom between the shower curtains and was extremely frightened and ran into a particularly dangerous mid section behind the couch. Foster Parent was concerned about her and put her hand behind the couch to try and move her and this is when Fudge bit FP on the hand leaving two puncture wounds that she spent the night in the ER treating. __________ Fudge was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/28/25 FB06 Upon approach, Fudge was wedged between the wall and her litterbox with ears forward, neutral eyes and a tense body. I offered her some squeeze up but she had no interest and tense more as I brought it close to her. I slowly approached her with the scratcher which she didn't sniff but did tolerate head and back pets with it. 10/29/25 FB58 In den and hidden from view, when cover is lifted she is sitting with a tense face and body but appears open to interaction. She sniffs the dry treats offered to her as well as the squeeze up but doesn't eat it. She allows pets with the tool along her head and body but remains tense. 10/31/25 FB58 In her den with a tense face and body, tolerates some touch before running out of the den and onto the shelf. She is slightly evasive of touch, and when offered dry treats and squeeze ups, she sniffs but does not eat the treats offered. 11/6/25 FB79 With a tense body, hunched in shoulders as well as a tightly wrapped tail and wide eyes Fudge watched me when i open the kennel door. She hissed harshly and when i tossed in treats she tensed up and curled herself back into the corner. 2/24/26 FB06 Fudge was laying underneath the bedding out of view when I opened the kennel door. Using the scratcher, I lifted the bedding and Fudge had wide eyes and forward ears. She was scanning the open door. She had no interest in the scratcher but tolerated some head pets. As I gave her chin and cheeks scratches she squirmed towards the back corner.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Fudge came from a home with about 40 other cats, it is likely that she was not appropriately socialized to humans. Fudge appears to be fearful and may not have had much human interaction up to this point. She is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, she does attempt to avoid human contact. During the assessment she backed away and avoid touch and would benefit from extra socialization. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents who are preferably familiar with adult cat socialization or are open to detailed counseling by staff. Contact with young children should be avoided or done under strict supervision to prevent provoking a fear response, further delaying socialization.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Fudge is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, she does attempt to avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach, Fudge is hidden inside her den. As the assessor opens the kennel door, she remains hidden. As the den cover is lifted, Fudge can be seen crouched in the back of the den with wide eyes, a tense body and her tail wrapped tightly around her body. As the scratcher tool was slowly offered, Fudge leaned in and sniffed it for a brief moment and then backed away. As the assessor attempted to pet her head with it, she pulled herself further into the back of the den to avoid contact, although she did tolerate it. Running the tool along her side, she watched with wide eyes trying to move away from the scratcher. The interaction was ended leaving Fudge with treats. 2/16/26 FB79 Upon returning to shelter Fudge is hiding under the bedding in the middle of the kennel; when the assessor lifted the bedding he was tense with a low body, wide eyes and his ears flat. He starts to move back to avoid the assessor that is speaking to him and offering treats. Fudge very quickly jumped to the top part of the kennel and when the assessor approached he wrapped his tail around his body tightly and looked away from the assessor. He tolerated all petting on his head and cheeks as well as down and around his body however, when the assessor attempted pick up he started to squirm and tried to dart towards the food and water tray. Fudge remained tense and tolerant but did not allow any handling. Fudge is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age.
