Hello, my name is Samuel. My animal id is #241330. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 6 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/12/2025, with the surrender reason stated as other.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Samuel is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Samuel was surrendered by his previous owner due a bite incident in the home. During exuberant play, Samuel was reported to become over aroused; jumping and becoming increasingly mouthy. As the owner tried to walk away, Samuel bit and held on to owner's foot for several seconds. The bite broke skin however no medical treatment was required. During his intake and with select staff, Samuel has been treat motivated and social. Medically, Samuel is noted to be underweight but is otherwise healthy.

Date of assessment:: 11/19/2025

Summary:: Samuel arrived at MACC following a bite incident. On November 8th Samuel’s owner was in the living room using their hands to play with him. They were moving their hands around his face and body. Samuel began to become over aroused, jumping up and mouthing the owner. The owner tried to push Samuel off, and told him to stop. When Samuel did not stop the owner began to walk away. As the owner was walking away Samuel grabbed the owner’s foot and bit them. The bite was a bite and hold that lasted for 5 seconds, Samuel only released the bite due to the owner hitting Samuel. This bite broke skin, bled, and left a puncture wound on the owner’s foot. The owner did not receive medical attention and treated the wounds at home. When Samuel arrived at MACC he was initially being walked. He had a neutral body and was aloof with handlers, however while in kennel it is noted that he would hard stare towards the handler. Due to the detailed behaviors, and a low threshold for arousal, Samuel is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 11/19/25 (KSV)- Samuel is at the back of his kennel with a neutral body, handler bends down and softly speaks to him. He comes to the front with a soft body and low wagging tail. He gently takes treats from handler's hand and keeps a low wagging tail. Handler holds their hand up to his kennel door, he sniffs at their hand and licks it. Handler gives him more treats and he remains social. Handler ends interaction. 11/14/25: Samuel is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body upon approach. He is then easily leashed and removed from the kennel; he would keep a neutral body on the way out towards the yard. While in the yard, he would remain aloof but would accept treats from the handlers hand. Handler attempts to coax Samuel using a soft voice and squeakers, which he wasn't receptive towards. As handler walks around the perimeter of the yard, Samuel immediately begins to relieve himself and continues the walk with no pulling and a neutral body. A dog would begin to bark in Samuel's direction, and he wouldn't show any interest in them and would continue the walk with no issue. Shortly after, he is easily clipped and returned back to his kennel. 11/13/25: Samuel is at the front of his kennel as handlers approach. He begins accepting treats from the initial handler that approaches the kennel but becomes slightly tense as the second handler approaches. Samuel hard stares toward them but when more treats are offered by second handler he accepts them gently. He is leashed while distracted with more treats and exits kennel quickly following handler. Samuel has raised hackles as he walks but is able to walk to the yard and enters without issue. He sniffs around briefly and ignores treats offered. He is brought around the perimeter of the yard and walks with handlers for a while, he ignores dogs he passes and walks for a while before he is brought back inside. His leash is clipped carefully and he is returned to kennel following tossed treats

Date of intake:: 11/12/2025

Summary:: Neutral body, neutral tail

Date of initial:: 11/12/2025

Summary:: Tense, allows placement of muzzle. Frozen and trembling throughout exam and tasks.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Samuel is described as low energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite history we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Samuel's previous owner states that he will have accidents a few times a ninth. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Basic Manners: Samuel's previous owner states that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Bite History (Human)/ Arousal: Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Please see handout on Arousal. On Leash Reactivity: Samuel's previous owner states that he lunge towards strangers that approach. Samuel will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
