Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 8/27/26: Lucky Charm is introduced to a novel intact female and approaches the fence with a tense body and slow high wagging tail. He sniffs nose to nose through the fence with hard eye contact, looks away, continues sniffing with high faster wags and then shakes off. He remains tense, slows his high wags, hard stares at the other dog and low growls. The other dog continues to solicit play through the fence, and Lucky Charm freezes and lunges towards the other dog while hard barking. He alarm barks towards her with slow high wags and redirects without issue while being led out of the yard.

Summary (6):: 9/8/26: Lucky Charm is at the front of his kennel with a loose body, standing on his hind legs; the handler leashes him with treats and presents a handful of them to him. As Lucky exits, the handler tosses treats on the ground, leading to the exit; he eats almost every treat and doesn't react to the kennels. Lucky exuberantly jumps on the handler repeatedly during the elevator ride. On the street, Lucky walks with mild to moderate leash tension, with no reactivity to people; Lucky notices dogs and briefly stares at them but continues on the walk. He also jumps on the handler again and allows pets. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Lucky to his kennel. 9/06/26: Lucky Charm is at the front of his kennel when handler approaches. He is leashed with treats. Right after exiting the kennel. Lucky Charm starts pull toward neighboring kennel with tense body. Handler is able to shorten the leash and keep Lucky on the wall side. He was muscled out of the room. Once in the hallway Lucky attempts jump onto the handle few times but stops by his own. He is panting a lot and his eyes are wide. In elevator handler is able to cue him to sit which helps Lucky settle. Once outside, Lucky Charm continues waking slightly ahead of the handler with mild to none pulling. He sniffs a lot during the walk and few times relieves himself. When he sees another dog he will pull toward them; his body is tense with high raised tail. Handler is able to redirect him with verbal recall and pull away. Lucky disengages quickly. He has no reaction to people passerby. Lucky is responsive and frequently looks back at the handler for check-ins. He allows petting and follows cue "sit". His body is visibly more relaxed after some time outside. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Lucky Charm back into his kennel with no further issues

Summary (7):: 9/4/26: Lucky Charm is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body; as the handler brings the leash into kennel, he bites it a few times before disengaging. Once he is brought out, Lucky may have either pawed or nipped the handler's shin. he then fixates, vocalizes and pull towards the kennels; the handler slowly walks him out on a short leash. Lucky turns towards the handler, but they straight arm the leash to brin him away. Once out the room, Lucky jumps towards the handler, but they straight arm him away. Lucky walks with mild leash tension and no reactivity to people. Lucky becomes alert when small dogs are barking in the distance; when he sees another dog, he presents a stiff body, but easily disengages. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and Lucky returns to his kennel with ease 9/3/26: On the whiteboard, Lucky Charm is noted to be kennel reactive, pulling towards the adjacent kennel; he is also noted to redirected (no more information provided). 8/27/26: Lucky Charm is at the front of his kennel with loose body when handler approaches. He gently takes offered treat and is leashed with a treat lure; he willingly exits the kennel and slowly walks through the hallways with no interest in pop-up crates or staff members. Once outside he immediately relieves himself and continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with mild leash tension. He has no interest in people passerby. When he sees another dog he will pull toward them with neutral body but quickly disengages after verbal recall. He is social with handler, receptive to treats and allows petting. His body remains neutral most of the time. Once walk is done, Lucky Charm is taken to the Canine Behavior office for the assessment (see notes). During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash; when approaching the kennel, Lucky Charm start retreating and refusing going back so he had to be muscled in. Handler was able to get the leash back after with ease. 8/26/26: Lucky Charm is reported to thrash while being returned to his kennel; he had to be muscled three times in order for him to enter

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Lucky Charm so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and potential for redirection, we recommend an adult-only home No Dog Parks: Due to their dog-dog interaction, we recommend no trips to the dog park. Place with a New Hope partner: due to Lucky Charm's poor impulse control and high levels of fear in the care center we recommend placing him with one of our New Hope Partners. Lucky Charm came into ACC as a stray. Because of this, we do not know how he is in a home environment. During his time in the care center, he has been noted to intensely kennel fight and thrash on leash. He has been observed to pull heavily towards other dogs in the kennel with a tense body and has to be muscled away from them. He is noted to be a snuggler by volunteers who knows sit and takes treats gently. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Lucky has been observed to head whip and retreat from handlers during exuberant contact. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Lucky would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Lucky has been observed to pull hard towards other dogs while on leash. Lucky will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Lucky Charm has been noted to repeatedly exuberantly jump on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", and "Down" are reinforced to substitute for any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see Hande out on Basic Manners. Strength/Leash pulling: Lucky charm is noted to pull hard on leash. Lucky Charm is a very strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
