Nami
Hello, my name is Nami. My animal id is #225887. I am a desexed female tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/8/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - cancer.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormNami is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: We like what we like and though a little open mindedness can help when faced with new situations, Nani tried that and it wasn't quite her style. Fair enough! Nani was brought to us with other cats when their person could no longer care for them. Though she reportedly gets along very well with other cats, Nani can take a little while to feel comfortable with new people. When Nani first came in, she would listen to our soft conversations as we petted her, but wasn't particularly interested in the treats we shared or very forthcoming when it came to first moves. Shelter life can be wearing and, in spite of all of our efforts, Nani has kind of circled into herself. She's exchanged the slight openness she showed us in the beginning to wanting to be very clear about her feelings on the shelter and our hopes of becoming friends. We know there's a family out there for this starry cat and hope you'll give her a chance.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/15/25 FB79 Inside of the den, Nami is out of sight and when i lift the den cover for a better view she curled up in the back with wide eyes and tightly wrapped tail. She showed no interest in treats and when i slowly introduced the pointer tool she flinches but tolerated all pets on her head/cheeks/chin but tensed up, backing away from the tool when it was used to pet down her back. 5/20/25 FB58 In and hidden from view, she hisses when the cover is lifted - eyes wide and dilated and face and body tense with tail wrapped tight. I offer her some treats inside her den and she shows no interest. She is tolerant of pets with the tool but remains tense and frozen before stress vocalizing. 5/23/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She avoids eye contact as I lift the den cover and she hisses when I place some treats in her den. She tolerates petting while hissing again so I don't push it much further to avoid creating stress. She sniffs the treats offered but she doesn't eat them during our session - she is too focused on me and the room. Nervous mamas, needs more time to adjust. 5/30/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense and tail wrapped tightly around her body. She hisses and avoids eye contact as I lift her den cover and she flinches slightly when offered treats. I keep the interaction brief to reduce stress. 6/3/25 FB58 In den and hidden, when the den cover is removed she is sitting pressed against the back with a eyes wide and dilated, face and body tense. I offer treats and she hisses and shows no interest. I slowly introduce the scratcher tool and she is tolerant of two pets before she hisses and swats at the tool multiple times. 6/5/25 FB79 Inside of the den, Nami is curled up in the back of her kennel with wide eyes and forward ears when i lift the cover for a better view; she hisses when i slowly bring in the assess-a-hand and tries to duck/dodge it but is tolerant of pets on her head and down her body. She lip licks a few more time before she hisses and tightly wraps her tail around her body while fixated on the tool with her eyes wide and dilated. She does not escalate and tolerates as few more pets before she hisses one last time. 6/09/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She does not come out when offered treats or a catnip toy. Hopefully she explores the offerings later when she feels more safe. She is tolerant of petting with the scratcher tool from within her den but I don't push hands on interaction too far to reduce stress. 6/15/25 Vol. Nami was inside her den. I lifted the cover and she hissed softly. I put Squeeze Up near the den opening and she tried to swat me. I took the scratcher tool and put it near her. She hissed and swatted at it so I ended the interaction. She was not in the mood to socialize today. GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Nami would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 5/11/25 Inside of the den, Nami is out of sight but has wide/dilated eyes and forward ears when the den cover is lifted; she immediately hisses when the assessor speaks to her and when the scratcher tool is slowly introduced into the den. However, she remains still and tolerant when being pet on her head and cheeks as well as down her back. When treats were used in attempt to coax her out she had no interest and turned her back towards the assessor facing the corner of the den to try and avoid any further contact. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 6/11/25 Nami displayed similar behaviors during her reassessment. 6/18/25 Upon re-eval, Nami is in her den and hidden from view - when the cage door is opened she hisses and cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the den cover is removed, she hisses and backs away with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. The assessor slowly offers a tube of squeeze up out and near the den opening and Nami quickly reaches out to swat at the assessor's hand, breaking the glove but not breaking skin. When the assessor then slowly offers out the scratcher too, she again swats at the tool multiple times and nips at it. Nami is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
