Emilio Pooch
Hello, my name is Emilio Pooch. My animal id is #267953. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/11/2026.
Emilio Pooch is at risk due to medical reasons. Emilio Pooch is a friendly, easily handlead geriatric male with a heart murmur and elevated proBNP, severe dental disease, and a suspected healed elbow fracture. He has developed CIRDC in the shelter, but is still eating wet food very well. He will need ongoing supportive care to maintain his appetite and a quiet environment to recover. Despite his age and chronic medical concerns, Emilio Pooch appears likely to have a good quality of life outside of the shelter where he can enjoy his golden years.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I can go home today! My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Emilio Pooch's handling sensitivity and resource guarding behavior, we recommend an adult only home or a home with dog-savvy older children who will be respectful of his space.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: During an interaction with staff, Emilio Pooch got tense and hovered over treats when attempting to handle him; as handlers continued to touch him, he snapped at them. We recommend that he be left alone while eating. For this reasons, we recommend that Emilio be left alone when eating. Nothing should ever be taken from his possession without safely trading for an item of equal or higher value. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful | Handling/touch sensitivity: Emilio Pooch has shown some fearfulness and sensitivity to handling while at the care center. He thrashed on leash when being removed from his kennel, and when handlers placed his collar, his body was tense and he head whipped. It is important to always go slow and give Emilio the option to walk away from any social interaction. He should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be his choice to approach a new person or thing. Emilio may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her/his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period and Handling/Touch Sensitivity.
