Hunter
Hello, my name is Hunter. My animal id is #248545. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 6 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/27/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormHunter is at risk due to behavioral concerns. While Hunter has been easy to remove from the kennel and has shown some sociable interactions with handlers/staff, he has displayed a concerning degree of resource guarding during the toy portion of his handling assessment and during his playgroup interaction. Hunter escalated to growling and biting the assess-a- hand twice before holding on to bite up the rod. During playgroup, Hunter was stiff-bodied, hard barking, and would fixate on the other dog. He was then introduced to a fake dog to gain more insight into his behaviors. Hunter repeatedly would pin and hover over the fake dog, body stiff and forward. Medically, Hunter is apparently healthy.

Hunter was surrendered due to his previous owner due to his owner going into a shelter. His family described to be affectionate and enjoying spending most of his time wherever his people are. His favorite snacks and food are chicken-flavored. During his stay in care, Hunter presents as easily leashed and sociable, but he has displayed a concerning level of resource guarding of a toy during his handling assessment and became uncomfortable during the petting portion. Due to Hunter's behavior concerns, we reocmnned for him to be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope Partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Summary:: According to Hunter’s previous owner(s), Hunter has interacted with different dogs and is often described as Hunter is social with other dogs. 03/07/27: Due to Hunter’s previous interactions with dogs, a fake dog was utilized to assess his off-leash behavior. Upon entering the yard, Hunter pulled hard on leash with a stiff, forward body posture and was observed hyper-salivating. He approached the gate and fixated on the fake dog with a square frame while scanning the area. Once the gate was opened, Hunter rushed toward the fake dog while maintaining a stiff, forward posture. He investigated the fake dog through scenting before circling it. Each time the handler moved the fake dog, Hunter displayed posturing behaviors such as chin-overs and Paw-overs. He then proceeded to persistently pin and then hover over the fake dog for the slightest movement after it fell over. Due to his concerning behaviors, Hunter was guided away from the fake dog by the handlers and returned to his kennel. 03/04/26: Hunter was introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate, Hunter approached with a stiff frame, forward posture and a tense, wrinkled facial expression. He began whining and quickly escalated to hard barking with a flagging tail. Hunter continued to hard bark and fixate on the female as she disengaged. Both dogs were separated, concluding the interaction.
Summary (6):: 3/13/26: Hunter is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping and barking at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with spray cheese on the ground. Once leashed, he then pulls hard to the behavior room. In the room, he would pull around to explore. He would approach a familiar handler and jump up with a loose body to receive pets. He is comfortable siting to receive treats and engages in a snuffle mat. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues.
Summary (7):: 03/10/26: Hunter is reported to jump up at handler's face three times while on walk. The first time he jumped up with an open mouth, the next two times his mouth is closed and he hard stares at handler. Handler stiff arms and brings him back to kennel safely. 3/8: As a handler is putting up kennel tags on Hunter's kennel, he is curled up quietly in his bed. He raises his head when he sees the handler. Hunter suddenly charges and slams into the kennel glass. Hunter remains standing on his back legs, tracking the handler's movements. He does not react further. 3/7/26: Hunter is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping and pawing at the door as the handler unlocks it and is able to be quickly leashed. He is then taken to the play yard for play group. Along the way, he would pull hard ahead with a tense body and constantly stop to mark his territory. He would hard stare at dogs that would pass by with a tense body. In the yard, pulls hard towards the fake dog and knocks it down and starts to intensely hump the fake dog. He would walk away and jump up on the handler that was holding the fake dog's leash and then go back to intensely humping the fake dog each time he saw it move. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 3/3/26 (assessment-late entry): Hunter is at the front of the kennel with a neutral frame as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will pull moderately to the behavior office where he is fitted with a collar while he licks spray cheese off the couch. His collar is clipped with a drag leash and he is then able to roam around the room. He maintains a loose frame, occasionally approaching the handler and will take a treat from their hand. During the toy portion of the assessment, Hunter will bite the fake hand twice, and the second time will bite up its arm, eventually refocusing on the toy and letting go. Hunter will no longer take treats and cheese is used to place a slip leash on him and remove the drag leash. He is returned to his kennel with no issue. (see assessment for more details).

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: During his handling assessment, Hunter growled and bit the assess-a-hand twice before holding on. We cannot be certain if this behavior will be seen in a future home environment. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Cin's possession without safely trading for an item of greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Handling/touch sensitivity: During the handling portion of his assessment, Hunter began whale eyeing, and his head whipped when touched. Please see hand out on Handling/touch sensitivity.
