Fluffy Mittens
Hello, my name is Fluffy Mittens. My animal id is #261901. I am a desexed male orange cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 2 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/20/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive to other animals.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormFluffy Mittens is on the At Risk list due to behavior. Though social in shelter, he has a bite/scratch history and is currently not a candidate for the Adoptions floor. He is now displaying signs of fixation on other cats and a has a history of redirected aggression. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a single-pet home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. Fluffy Mittens is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. Although he has been friendly, social, and easy to handle during his stay at the care center, he has a prior bite and scratch history in his previous home and a history of redirected aggression. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Indoor Previously lived with: 1 adult, 1 cat Behavior toward strangers: Friendly, outgoing, plays gently, shy and timid, hides initially, warms up before two weeks and stress meows. Behavior toward children: Friendly, outgoing, plays gently, shy and timid, hides initially, warms up before two weeks and stress meows. Behavior toward cats: Friendly Bite or Scratch history: None reported by original surrendering party. Incidents reported in prior adopters home are as follows: On 9/13/26 around 5:30pm, the adopter was attempting to introduce their resident cat to Fluffy Mittens. The resident cat was in his room with the door closed and began meowing. Fluffy Mittens approached the door and the two cats saw each other through the gap under to door and began hissing and yowling at each other. Fluffy Mittens then began attacking the gap under the door, trying to reach the resident cat. The client attempted to place a towel over Fluffy Mittens to pick him up and return him to the bathroom to separate them. Fluffy Mittens got out from under the towel and jumped up at the client’s face, biting his face and leaving a puncture wound on his cheek and a 1cm split in his lip. The cat also left several scratches on his neck, arms, and legs when he jumped at the client again. The client was able to get the towel around Fluffy Mittens and placed him back in the bathroom, closing the door. The client went to receive treatment at an urgent care and when he returned the cat was alert and showed no signs of agitation or residual aggression. He approached the client, meowed, and accepted pets, treats, and play. On 9/19/26, the adopter’s resident cat was meowing in the living room. Fluffy Mittens appeared agitated at the sound and the client left him in the bathroom for a few minutes to calm down. Upon returning, Fluffy Mittens began vocalizing and lunged at the client’s leg, climbing up his body and leaving scratches on his arms, legs, and a more severe scratch to his right hand. The client grabbed a towel and used it to distract him, wrap him up, and place him elsewhere in the bathroom before leaving. The client returned later in the day to clean his litterbox. There was no sound or sight of the other cat at this point in time, he began to attack. As he was leaving, Fluffy Mittens also ran after him and lunged again. A secondary screen he had set up on the doorway stopped him from getting out and prevented further injury. He then went back inside the bathroom and closed the door. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 8/11/26 Fluffy Mittens is laying in his den as the assessor approaches, body and eyes neutral as the kennel door is opened. When he is softly spoken to and petting is attempted, he leans into petting on the head and cheeks. He is able to be coaxed out of the den with a squeeze up treat, eating all of it quickly and being able to be fed by hand. Fluffy Mittens is able to be easily picked up, remaining calm when he is held. When he is placed back into the kennel, he remains at the front, continuing to allow and lean into all further petting and raising his back as he is pet. 9/29/26 Fluffy Mittens is sitting upright at the front of the kennel, observing the assessor with soft eyes and body as the kennel door is opened. He leans forward to sniff their hand before softly head bunting it, allowing and leaning into all petting and kneading as he is pet. During this interaction, his tail does begin to swoosh but he remained tolerant of petting without escalation. Fluffy Mittens calmly steps out of the kennel and is able to be easily picked up, squirming after a few seconds. When placed back into the kennel he remains at the front, remaining receptive to further interaction, head bunting and leaning into all further petting. Discomfort with other cats is observing during the assessment. A cat in an adjacent kennel begins to trill and Fluffy Mittens immediately tenses, craning his neck and hard staring with a stiff body and dilated pupils. His attention is slowly refocused with and petting, tensing on initial contact before relaxing into the contact after a couple of seconds. He did not redirect onto the handler during the interaction.
