Animal Profile

Noodle

Hello, my name is Noodle. My animal id is #228742. I am a female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/3/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Noodles is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Noodles in the care center has been highly dog reactive on walks, hard barking, growling and lunging at other dogs on walks making it very default to refocus him once reacting and difficult to walk him safely in the care center. Noodles is social with staff, but struggling to acclimate to the care center environment. Medically, Noodles is healthy. Recommend basic at-home dental care.

Pre-Screener Form Noodles is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Noodle was surrendered as a stray, so her past behavior in a home environment is unknown. Noodle has been social with staff and handlers during her stay in care, readily accepting treats, petting, and engaging with her enrichment. But she has displayed a high level of dog reactivity on and off leash. During walks, Noodle has escalated to lunging, hard barking, and growling at other dogs and is unable to settle, even when the handler increases distance and uses visual barriers. Noodle has also broken out of her crate and charged at another dog while the other dog was with a handler. Due to these concerns, we recommend for Noodle to be placed in an adult-only home where she can be the only dog through a New Hope Partner. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I need a home where there are no other dogs. I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I am not one to sit still! I will flourish in a home with someone that will keep me mentally and physically active!

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 06/09/25 Noodle is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Noodle doesn't greet the novel male dog at the gate, displacing as she enters the pen, scenting intensely. The novel male dog will approach the gate with a neutral frame and Noodle will realize him standing behind the gate. At this point Noodle lunges at the gate, snarling and growling. The novel male dog will disengage, walking away from the gate aloof, ignoring the novel female dog as she is moved away from the gate. Noodle is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (6):: 06/16/25 (PM) Noodle is at the front of her kennel with wide dilated eyes and heavily panting as she stands up on her kennel door. The handler will unlock the kennel door and drop down to one knee, administering treats to noodle while clipping her harness. They proceed outside for a walk. Before exiting the kennel room, she lunges at her neighboring kennel. Noodle will pull on the leash displaying a loose, wiggly frame, jumping up excessively. The handler will work on her staying down on all fours, administering a treat whenever she sits, soliciting treats from the handler. Noodle is highly treat motivated, listening to cues such as "here" used as a form of recall and "sit" in which she will do willingly. To where Noodle appears aroused when exiting the facility, as the walk commences, Noodle becomes manageable, pulling less on lead and checking in frequently. Noodle is engaged with the handler, ignoring a female dog on the walk with a novel handler. Noodle is taken into the building. When approaching her kennel, directional leash pressure is applied, guiding her in the kennel. 06/15/25: Noodle is standing at the front of kennel with a loose frame as handler approaches. She begins jumping up onto the kennel door excitedly and is leashed with ease. Noodle pulls hard to the Live Room where she is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. Noodle spends her time engaging with a snuffle mat and licky mat offered to her. She is social with handler throughout her time in the room and will lean in to petting with a loose frame. Noodle allows for harnessing and after her session, is returned to kennel safely. 06/14/25 (staff reported): It is reported that while out on a walk with a staff member, Noodle is displaying a high level of arousal, pulling hard, heavy panting, and hypervigilant. Noodle pulls towards a staff member who is entering the building and lunges forward, biting at their wrist area, grabbing their sleeve momentarily before the staff member pulls their arm away. The bite did not break skin. 06/13/25: Noodle is standing at the front of kennel with a loose frame as handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and pulls hard to the Live Room, zigzagging back and forth in front of handler and panting heavily. Once in the room, Noodle is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. She spends several minutes rotating between a licky mat, snuffle mat, and puzzle feeder offered to her. Noodle will readily come when called and leans into petting with a loose frame before returning to the licky mat. After her session Noodle pulls hard back to kennel, returning safely.

Summary (7):: 6/11: It was noted on the board that Noodle is leash biting 6/9/25: Noodles is at the front of his kennel and is easily leashed to be taken out for a dog-dog greet. Noodles, upon leaving the kennel room, begins to pull and grumble at the other dogs in the kennel room. He is hurried along and brought outside to the pen for a greeting. Noodles begins to walk up the gate, muzzle punc,h and vocalize towards the other dog when greeting at the gate. Noodles is returned to the kennel and pulled away from the gate, and enters his kennel with no issue. 6/8: (AM) Noodles was reported to push past an ACS when they were attempting to leash her from her crate for her morning walk. Once they were able to leash her, she was taken outside for her walk. Noodles was reported to become highly reactive to other dogs that she saw - lunging, hard barking, growling - that continued even when attempting to increase distance with Noodles and the other dogs. The ACS had to walk down the block in the opposite direction at the front of the building to give her some time to settle and the other dogs the opportunity to be out of sight. Once back in the building, Noodles went into her crate following treats. (PM) A handler leashed another dog in the room to move to a different kennel when Noodle began to become reactive in her crate, barking, lunging, and growling. She can break out of her crate and charges toward the handler and the dog they are with, teeth bared. The dog the handler has is also dog reactive, so they quickly swing him away from Noodle to between the handler's legs as they are attempting to fob him into the behavior office. Noodle darts between the handler's legs and attempts to grab the other dog's back leg, but catches the handler's ankle instead. She does not break skin and left 2 small red teeth impressions. The handler can get the door open and has to use their foot to push Noodle back into the room as she attempts to chase the other dog into the behavior office. Once the door is closed, Noodle races around the room, running up to other dogs' crates. She doesn't react further as the majority of the crates are covered with sheets. Noodle's body softens when other handlers race over to leash her and accept treats during the leashing before she is placed into a new kennel. 06/04/25: Noodles is standing at the front of her kennel and allows the handler to leash her with ease. She is then brought to the assessment room, where a collar and drag leash are placed on her, and she is set free to roam. Noodles displays high arousal, jumping up on the handler and slamming her front paws against the door. She does not engage with toys, but remains social with the handler and allows handling and touch throughout the session. For more information, see behavior assessment. Noodles was returned to her kennel safely with no issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No Children (under 13): Due to the concerning level and intensity of Noodle's dog and on-leash reactivity, we recommend that she be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Noodle has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY) and during her stay in care, we feel that Noodle should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Noodle associate dogs with things she enjoys, like toys or treats. Place with a New Hope partner: While Noodle has presented as social with handlers and staff, she has displayed a concerning level of reactivity toward other dogs during her stay in care. She has broken out of her crate to charge at another dog that was with a handler, and has displayed a concerning level of on-leash reactivity to other dogs on walks; needing a large distance with the addition of visual barriers before she can settle. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior in addition to her reactivity Noodle presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Noodle jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve her impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach her to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Noodles has been observed to hard bark, growl, and lunge at other dogs on a walk. She was reported not to recover and had to be almost half a block away and out of sight before she would settle. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
