Chewsday is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Chewsday has not acclimated well to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. In her kennel, she has alternated between coming forward for treats but then retreating during leashing. As her length of stay progressed, Chewsday began leash biting and escalated to snapping and attempting to bite when staff/handlers are in the process of removing her from the kennel and, on another occasion, immediately upon exiting the kennel. Medically, Chewsday is being treated for CIRDC, has dental disease, a healing wound, and is considered geriatric.

Medically, Chewsday is being treated for CIRDC, has dental disease, a healing wound, and is considered geriatric. Chewsday was surrendered as a stray, so her past behavior in a home environment is unknown. Chewsday has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. She has escalated to hard barking, growling, snapping at feet, and attempting to bite a handler's foot when trying to remove her from her kennel for a walk. Once out of kennel, she has been reluctant to walk and has been reported to leash bite. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary (6):: 7/19: Chewsday is seated on her kuranda bed when a handler enters the room. As the handler passes the kennels, Chewsday charges to the front of her kennel, alternating between hard barking and growling at the handler. When she quiets, the handler offers her treats, which she takes with a hard mouth. The handler walks away to assist ACS staff with another dog in the room. She continues hard barking at the front of her kennel.

Summary (7):: 7/14 (pm): A handler is unable to remove Chewsday from her kennel due to her immediately attempting to bite their foot once the kennel door was cracked open as she tries to push out. They quickly slam the door closed, but Chewsday continues trying to bite, her muzzle hitting the kennel door. The hadnler locks the kennel door and turns to exit the room, Chewsday still vocalizing at the front of the kennel. The handler leaves to get assistance. Chewsday is given some time to settle before making another attempt to remove her from the kennel to move her to a new one to accommodate her behaviors. She rushes to the front of the kennel when she sees two different handlers approach, growling low. She takes offered treats but retreats to the back of the kennel once the door is opened. But then comes back for more treats. She dodges leashing once, but the handler is able to successfully leash her. Once the door is opened, she slowly begins to plant but then raises when a treat trail is made. She follows the trail out of the room and into the hallway. Once at the door to the new room, she readily walks and enters the new kennel without issue. 07/14/26: A canine rep reported that Chewsday refused to go out for a walk, stopping and pancaking at the door. The handlers were able to clean her kennel and return her with no other issues. 7/13: (1) An adoption counselor asks a handler for assistance with getting Chewsday out of the kennel for an adoption interaction. They stated that when they would try, she would take the treats but then run to the back of the kennel, barking and growling at them. Once the door was closed, she would retrurn to the front of the kennel. The handler drops a treat scatter, and the counselor is able to leash her while she is eating. Chewsday readily exits the kennel and is taken outside to the play yard. Chewsday is reported to refuse walking further up the ramp, planting. She follows slowly with coaxing. (2): A staff member reported Chewsday has started to leash bite. 07/12/26: A note on the whiteboard states that Chewsday snapped at another handler immediately upon exiting the kennel. 07/05/26(PG note): Chewsday is lying down in the back of her kennel and slowly approaches the front as the handler tosses treats into the kennel. While she is eating the treats, the handler slowly leashes her. She is then brought to the play yard to meet a male playmate. Upon entering the play yard, Chewsday appears Anxious and nervous, walking slowly while scanning, sniffing, and investigating her surroundings. She does not fully approach the greeting gate for a nose to nose greeting. Instead, she stops just short of the gate, sniffs the air, then disengages by turning away, indicating she is not interested in interacting with the other dog. During her intake, when being removed from the crate, Chewsday was stiff bodied, refused to enter the kennel by planting. During her medical exam, she began low growling while being removed from the kennel, and had whale eyes when entering the exam room.
