Kay
Hello, my name is Kay. My animal id is #231427. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/17/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.
Kay is a sweet young cat who is feline leukemia positive. He has an upper respiratory infection and is eating. Kay needs a quieter environment with more individualized attention than we can provide in shelter. Kay continues to seek attention and enjoys having his face cleaned.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...
This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Kay is a sweet young cat who is feline leukemia positive. He has developed a severe upper respiratory infection and is now not eating for us. Kay needs a more quiet environment with more individualized attention than we can provide in shelter. Kay continues to seek attention and enjoys having his face cleaned. A volunteer writes: Kay and all of his housemates were brought to the Manhattan Care Center as the family's allergies took a turn for the worst. Kay is said to be a very friendly, affectionate, playful and talkative lap cat, very good with visitors and children. He would not be fond of other cats, though. Kay started as timid at the care center but he knows his friends and we always have a great time together. He used to be a bit handshy but not anymore and now enjoys all the petting that sends him head bunting my hand and purring. He absolutely loves to play with feather wands and catnip toys(see his video). Kay is FeLV+ which means that his defences against infections and other conditions are lower than a regular cat. The FeLV virus is only transmissible to other cats but not to other species. As a result, Kay(who anyway prefers to live as a solo cat) should be adopted as the only kitty in the house. FeLV+ cats are just as great pets as non FeLV+ ones. They all need care and love. If you have it in you to adopt such a cat, come to the Manhattan Care Center, meet Kay, ask our adoption counselors about his health condition and hopefully take him home as your new beloved for ever best friend. What my friends at ACC say about me: I lived with children in my previous home. The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am a cat that is in need of a lap! I can't wait to be your new lap cat. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/22/25 ACFR Kay is laying in his cubby, sitting up and lip licking as the door is opened. He comes forward for a squeeze up, immediately eating it. When he is done eating, he stretches forward, allowing petting on the head, cheeks, and shoulders. He periodically pauses, tenses, and backs away but does remain receptive to petting and treats when offered again.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Sweet,Curious,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: He is very food motivated. We recommend using high-valued treats to build a positive association with human interactions and distract or encourage him in the event he has to be handled.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 2
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats
Recommendations comments:: Reported to hiss at other cats.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Kay was curled up at the back of the kennel with his head and ears forward, focused on the assessor with a neutral body and wide eyes. When spoken to and opening the door, he steps back, but he eagerly accepts treats offered. When pet on the head, he flinches, but he is easily distracted with more treats to tolerate petting. He allows cheek rubs and stroking his body but does not engage with the attention. The assessor continues to distract him with more treats to rotate his body. During pick up, he tenses up, stiffens out his limbs, and pushes against the assessor's body when held for 5 seconds. After placing him back down, he is easily coaxed forward with more treats to eat, beings purring, and tolerates more petting and cheek rubs. Kay tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He will likely need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior.
