While waiting for another dog, Chewy jumps on the second handler present in the pen; he allows pets from both handlers. (Please read Dog-Dog notes. The handler brings Chewy inside, and when walking to the elevator, he sees a dog, but the handler pulls him away. The handler clips their leash; however, Chewy baulks outside the room. The handler then begins to run, and Chewy stands up and then returns to his kennel with ease. 12/6/25: Chewy is at the front of the kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. In the elevator heading downstairs, the handler says the command "sit" to Chewy. Date of initial:: 11/19/2025

Summary:: Allows all handling for exam and then becomes mouthy, muzzled

ENERGY LEVEL:: Chewy is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Static

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Poor Impulse control and Hyper-arousal concerns, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/Impulse Control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach Chewy to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see hand-out on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Low-threshold for Arousal/ Leash Biting/ Mouthiness: Chewy quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up on handlers persistently throughout assessment and observed to frequently leash bite. During her stay in the care center Chewy has been obsvered to jump up on handlers often, mouthing their hands and pawing at their clothing. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Chewy to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Chewy. Please see hand out on Arousal.
