Tito
Hello, my name is Tito. My animal id is #252889. I am a male blonde dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/25/2026.
Tito is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He has lost considerable weight while in the shelter, and on bloodwork he has elevated liver values. He also has pneumonia. He needs care and support that we cannot provide. Behaviorally, when he first arrived Tito was shut down and allowed minimal handling. He has slowly warmed up to staff and enjoys gentle pets, low pressure social interactions, and walks.

Behaviorally, when he first arrived Tito was shut down and allowed minimal handling. He has slowly warmed up to staff and enjoys gentle pets, low pressure social interactions, and walks. Meet Tito! Tito was found in a playground and is now ready to find a calm, steady home where he can settle in and feel safe. He's a thoughtful boy who likes to observe his surroundings and take things in at his own pace. My Ideal Home Tito would do best in an adult-only home that can offer patience, structure, and a predictable routine. A low-pressure environment will help him feel more comfortable and allow his personality to come forward naturally. Good with Other Pets? Tito has shown neutral behavior around other dogs in the shelter. Slow, structured introductions are recommended as he continues to settle and gain confidence. Good with Kids? No children under 13, as Tito benefits from a quieter environment while he continues to build confidence and comfort. Things to Know Tito is a calm, observant dog who stays close to his handler and engages appropriately with gentle handling. He can be a bit reserved and prefers not to seek out attention directly, but he does allow interaction and moves through the world in a steady, measured way. At times, he can become a bit focused on toys or objects, so continued guidance and enrichment will help him stay relaxed and engaged. With time and consistency, Tito has strong potential to blossom in a stable home. Fun Fact Tito may be quiet, but he's the kind of companion who's always just one step behind you, calmly keeping you company wherever you go.

Summary (5):: 5/15/26: As handlers approach Tito kennel, Tito is loose and wiggly propped up in front of the kennel door. Handlers quickly and easily leash Tito up and he walked himself out of kennel. Tito is tethered and eats his breakfast while handlers clean his crate. Once finished handlers proceed with Tito through the hallway making way to outside. Tito greets med staff while walking out and quickly exits building to use the bathroom. Tito then is brought around the block where he continues to sniff and receive pets from handlers with minimal leash tension. Once Tito is finished, he is brought into the building which breezes by. Tito is then walked to his kennel and he walks in with no issues.
Summary (6):: 5/13/2026: As handler approaches towards tito crate, Tito is at the back of the crate laying on his bed with a relax body. Handler attempts to coax him forward with a treat, Tito sniffs but doesn’t take it. The handler steps aside and slightly widens the crate door. Shortly after, Tito slowly stands up allowing handler effortlessly lashes Tito. Tito stretches out and walks out of the crate. Tito is taken out for a walk. As he heads out, he relieves himself in the medical hallway. As the walk continues he walks next to handler side & slightly walks foward to sniff intrest areas with no leash tension. Heading back to MACC Tito increments his pace and walks ahead of handler with a neutral body. Once inside Tito is pre clipped and coaxed into the crate with a tray of chicken, leash is removed with ease. 5/8/26: Tito is standing facing the entrance of the kennel with a loose body when handlers approach to walk him. Handlers quickly leash him and Tito exits the room with no issues and no leash pulling. As Tito makes way for outside, he stops by medical staff to greet them and seek attention which he's receptive to. while outside Tito quickly uses the bathroom and explores his surroundings. while outside Tito doesn't react to dogs and has a loose body full time. Once finished handlers bring Tito back in and he is easily placed in his crate. 5/6/26: Tito is lying down and the sits at the front when the handler approaches; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Tito walks with mild leash tension; he doesn't react to dogs or people. Tito also engages with the handler by sniffing their hand and allowing pets. Upon entry, the handler brings Tito inside for his assessment (see notes), and returns him to his crate afterwards. 04/30/26: Tito is at the center of his kennel as handler approaches, he is leashed while laying down and stands before exiting kennel and following handler out to the street. Tito walks slowly and passes people on the street without issue, Tito is picky with treats and will only accept some. Tito relieves himself during his walk shortly after reaching the street. He allows handler to gently pet under his chin and walks for a while more before being brought back inside. He allows handler to clip his leash and is returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 4/28/26: Tito is laying at the front of his kennel; as the handler reaches in to leash him, he slowly lifts his head, and flinches when the leash makes contact. Even as he is leashed, Tito doesn’t approach. The handler adds leash pressure to bring him closer to the front. Once he’s at the door, Tito exits on his own. On the street, Tito walks with little to no leash tension; he doesn’t react to people or dogs. The handler themselves and begins to pet Tito; he flinches at first, but allows it. Once the handler stops, Tito continues to walk again. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Tito to his kennel with ease. 4/27/26: Tito is laying at the back of his kennel upon approach. Handler tosses in treats but he is not interested. A bunch of treats are tossed closer to the front of the kennel and handler steps away. When they return, Tito is standing in his kennel eating the treats. Handler is able to reach in and secure a leash despite him moving his head away and retreating. The kennel door is opened wide and handler steps to the side but Tito remains at the back. Handler kneels and tosses more treats. After time he stands and comes to the front to eat the treats but will not step out of kennel. Some pressure is placed on the leash and Tito comes out of kennel and walks to the yard. He is tense tucked tail. His leash is easily clipped and he returns to kennel without issue. 04/26/26: Tito is at the back of his kennel curled up and facing away from his kennel door as handler approaches. Handler attempts softly call to Tito whose eyes are open at this point, however he refuses to turn around. Handler tosses some treats which Tito sees and begins to eat, slowly approaching the front of kennel as he follows the treats. Handler attempts to slowly leash him but Tito backs away quickly and begins avoiding the leash. He is eventually lassoed and handler steps to the side waiting for Tito to exit kennel, more treats are tossed and Tito approaches the front of kennel and handler uses mild leash pressure to get him out of kennel. Once outside Tito is tense with a slightly tucked tail, he walks near handler and does not pull. He walks with handler out to the street, outside he passes people without issue and ignores dogs he sees outside. He accepts a tossed treat while walking but ignores treats offered to him for the rest of the walk. After walking a bit he is brought back inside and his leash is slowly clipped before he is returned to kennel without issue.

Date of initial:: 4/25/2026
Summary:: Tense and growling. Opted to sedate
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Tito so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Tito has been observed to become tense and hover over a toy in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Tito's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful Defensive: Tito has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to growl and handlers and thrash while on leash. It is important to move slowly with Tito, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
