Genesis
Hello, my name is Genesis. My animal id is #229262. I am a desexed female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 6/11/2025.
Genesis is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Genesis in the care center has not been acclimating despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Genesis in the care center has been starting to kennel fight entering and exiting rooms, lunging at other dogs kennels and hard barking making it difficult to walk her safely. Genesis has also displaying increased reactivity on leash when outside for walks. Medically, Genesis is overweight.

Summary:: Due to Genesis entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 06/15/25 Genesis is introduced to a Male greeter dog at the gate while off leash at the care center. Genesis will approach the gate with a wiggly frame scenting the greeter dog through the gate as does the greeter dog. The greeter dog is exuberant, offering play bows, making Genesis uncomfortable as she creates distance from the gate, lip licking in the process. As Genesis displaces, scenting away from the gate displaying hackles, the greeter dog will vocalize at her attempting to solicit her attention. Genesis will quickly approach the gate to snarl and quickly separate herself once more. The greeter dog remains self-present maintaining a soft, wiggly frame. Genesis is moved away from the gate and kept at a distance before being returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 06/13/25: While off-leash at the Care Center, Genesis is introduced to a novel male dog. She approaches the gate with a light confident trot. Both dogs engage in mutual scenting through the gate. The novel male begins to whine and display lip licking, while Genesis responds with chattering and play bows. As the interaction continues, the novel male appears to grow increasingly frustrated, with his whining intensifying. Genesis mirrors this behavior, beginning to whine as well, indicating conflict on both sides. The dogs are then separated, concluding the interaction.
Summary (5):: 7/31/25: Genesis is observed to be in the street, lunging and hard barking at another dog that is across the opposite of the street, Genesis needs to be walked on the other side of a car in order for her to stop reacting. Genesis is then seen to kennel fighting entering the kennel room.
Summary (6):: 07/30/25 Genesis is at the front of her kennel sitting softly with a wagging tail as the handler approaches. Genesis is leashed and taken out to the play yard. Genesis exuberantly pulls her way towards the exit of the building, displaying a loose frame and wagging tail. As they exit the building, Genesis will pull her way towards the yards, turning and spinning, booping the handler playfully. Genesis will enter the pen and catch the zoomies, running around the pen exuberantly. As a drag leash is placed on her once she stops running around, she continues to run around, engaging with toys lying around and jumping into an available pool. After sometime has passed, Genesis is returned to the facility, entering the building and her kennel with no issue. 7/23/25: Genesis is quite the little charmer. On our first walk together, she excitedly ran up to her kennel door as I opened it, full of wags and wiggles. I took her to the play-yard, and boy, did she have fun! We played her version of fetch, in which she happily chases the ball, gallops back to me, then plops down and gets to work chewing away at it. I tried a toy too and she lounged out on the grass and entertained herself by pulling it apart. I think the only thing she loves more is getting lots of pets, especially having her ears and back scratched…she leans in and does these cute little wiggle-dances, with her tail happily swishing around. She knows “sit” and “shake”, takes treats nicely, and seems to be housebroken. I also love her big floppy ears. 07/24/25 (Trainer Note): Genesis is easily leashed and attempts to lunge towards other kennels as she is walked out of the room. She is loose and social with staff and engages with mild interest in the various enrichment items. Genesis is returned to kennel without issue. 7/20: A handler easily leashes Genesis and brings her to the behavior office to fit her with a harness for an adoption event. Once out of the kennel, Genesis pulls hard on the lead. She lunges toward another dog she sees down the hallway and then begins kennel fighting with dogs in crates. Genesis bares her teeth, growls, barks hard, and snaps at the dog closest to the office door. Due to her behavior, the handler does not attempt to fit her with the harness, and she is given a few minutes to settle before she is returned to her kennel using a different pathway to reduce her kennel fighting.
Summary (7):: 7/17/25: Genesis is observed returning to her kennel and immediately begins to kennel fight with a dog to the right of her entering the small dog adoptions room. Genesis is lunging, hard barking as the ACS struggles to move past, and will kennel fight with dogs as they jump up at there when she's passing, hard barking and pulling hard towards them. 07/08/25:When the handler approaches, Genesis is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose, relaxed body posture. She is easily leashed and escorted to the play yard. While on leash, Genesis walks ahead of the handler with a loose frame, exhibiting mild pulling. Once in the yard, she attempts to chase birds. The handler shortens the leash, and Genesis sits beside them. Each time Genesis looks away from the birds or checks in with the handler, she is rewarded with treats. After several repetitions, Genesis is calmly escorted back to her kennel, where she is safely secured. 06/15/25: Genesis is lying on her kuranda bed with a neutral frame as handler approaches. She is comes to the front of kennel and is leashed with ease, walking on a loose lead out to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-to-Dog Summary for further details). Genesis is social with handlers throughout her time in the yard and will approach to solicit attention. After her session, she trots back into the Care Center, briefly balking at the door to the kennel room but is easily coaxed forward with a soft tone and light directional leash pressure. She is returned to kennel safely. 6/14/25: Genesis is observed to sit and not want to enter kennel, putting all her weight back when the handler tries to coax her. Genesis has to be helped into her kennel and will try to run out when placed into kennel. 06/13/25: Genesis is standing loosely at the front of her kennel and allows the handler to leash her with ease. She is then brought to the play yard to meet a playmate. Once inside the yard, Genesis allows the handler to place a collar on her without issue. She runs up to the gate and offers a nose-to-nose greeting with her playmate, displaying a play bow and beginning to whine in anticipation of further interaction. For more information, see dog-to-dog notes. Genesis is brought back to her kennel safely without any issues.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the reluctance to return to the kennel and the intensity of her on-leash and kennel reactivity, we recommend that Genesis to be in an adult-only home. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors displayed during her stay in care and during playgroup, we recommend for Genesis to not attend dog parks and to be the only dog in a home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Genesis has been observed to become fearful and reluctant to return to the kennel. Please see the handout on the Decompression Period. Anxiety: Genesis began to display heavy panting and whining during her assessment. Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Genesis has escalated to lunging, hard barking, and growling when passing other dogs while on lead and when passing crates/kennels. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
