Animal Profile

Muneca

Hello, my name is Muneca. My animal id is #227537. I am a female orange tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/20/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - cannot afford vet bill.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Muneca is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Not everyday can be a great day and sometimes we get a string of not so really good ones that add up. It's never too late to turn it all around, especially for Muneca who has been cared for since she was a baby and is looking for a family to welcome her in. She knows she might not be the most outgoing, preferring her den to hanging out at the front and she knows she hasn't been feeling particularly chirpy or purry at the moment, choosing instead to lean into her grumbles. Muneca appreciates treats, however, and though she started to list her grievances when I opened her condo door, she paused her grumbly streak when she saw I had some snacks. Like any of us, there's more to Muneca than what we see or hear on the surface. At eight years old, Muneca recently had kittens of her own and all of them crossed the rainbow bridge. I don't think she's going to ask for herself, so I'll ask for her and say that she just really needs another chance.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Muneca was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Prior assessment 5/23/25: Muñeca was in the den, appearing nervous, and struggled as if to flee when approached with the treat bag. She sniffed treats off the scratcher tool, then allowed brief petting, and gave a couple of hisses. Then, without further warning, she struck the scratcher tool extremely hard while hissing, and no further interactions were done. 5/31/25 FB47 Muneca appeared tense and wary, froze when she caught sight of me, and when I turned away, she retreated inside her den. 6/4/25 FB26 Inside the den upon approach. She slowly retreats after lifting up den cover sitting upright against the back wall. Muneca hissed at the scratcher tool avoiding contact. She briefly allows petting with no interest. Ended to reduce stress. 6/6/25 FB26 Retreats after lifting up den cover. Alert with eyes wide. Hisses but allows cheek rubs through the side portal door with the scratcher tool. She remains in place throughout the interaction. Ended to reduce stress.
