Date of assessment:: 11/18/2025

Summary:: Jojo has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to be at the back of the kennel with a tense and trembling body. After exiting the kennel Jojo is observed to escalate to thrashing while on leash. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety Jojo is not a candidate at this time.

Summary (6):: 11/21/25: Jojo was displaying the same behaviors as EN on 11/19.

Summary (7):: 11/19/25: Jojo is laying near the front of his kennel, behind the kennel blocker. When handler approaches and removes the blocker and unlocks the door, he slowly crawls towards the back of the kennel. He is not interested in treats tossed. Handler opens the door wide and kneels down. He begins to shake. Higher value treats are tossed to him but he remains uninterested. As the leash is presented he turns his head away and faces the corner of the kennel. Interaction is ceased due to his stress levels. 11/18/25 (late entry)- Jojo is fully laying across at the back of his kennel with slight tense body as handler approaches, handler softly speaks to Jojo and tosses in treats. He stays laying down and just side eyes handler. Handler slowly lassos a leash onto Jojo, they fully open the door but Jojo doesn't move. Handler continues softly talking to Jojo and his back legs/ tail shake with a mild tense body. Handler sits at the lip of Jojo's kennel and toss in more treats. He doesn't show any interest in them and he lays his head down, he starts to fall asleep. Handler closes his kennel door and retrieves a pillow. They return, open his kennel door, he is still in the same spot. They place a pillow by him and he slowly leans his head onto it just looking at handler with a neutral body. His tail occasionally starts to shake. Jojo allows handler to slowly remove their slip lead and ends interaction. 11/18/25: Jojo is lying towards the back of his kennel upon approach. His head is low as he would look at the handler and begin to visibly tremble. Handler attempts to coax him forward using a soft voice and different high value treats (chicken, ham and cheese). He wasn't receptive towards any of them and would just watch the handler. Handler then uses a long leash to leash him, he is successfully leashed and would slowly walk towards the front of the kennel. He would then not walk out as handler attempts to apply pressure to the leash, he would begin to retreat back and cower. Shortly after, handler uses the hook to remove the leash and the interaction is then over due to high FAS. 11/17/25: ACS report that Jojo would attempt to shove his head into the corner of his kennel and avoid the leash, Once he's lassoed with the leash they have to 'tug' on the leash to remove him. Once out of the kennel, he would slightly thrash and then is muscled back into kennel after he wouldn't walk.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Jojo is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Jojo.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking towards unfamiliar dogs we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Jojo's previous owner states that he will hard bark towards strangers. They also state that Jojo is fearful when startled. During his stay in the care center Jojo has been observed to be highly fearful, noted to have a tense and trembling body. While on leash he is observed to thrash. It is important to move slowly with Jojo, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Jojo's previous owner states that he will lunge at small animals while on leash. Jojo will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other small animals. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Jojo's previous owner states that he will pull really hard on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
