Scarlett will allow petting, leaning in as the pet rubs her back. She takes treats roughly when administered and catch them when tossed. Scarlett is returned to the facility entering the building with no issue. Upon entering her kennel room, she will lunge towards the kennel across from her. Potential challenges: : Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Bite history (dog): Scarlett was reported to have bitten the landlord’s small dog to a high degree that required surgery. The adopter stated that their apartment is separated from their landlord’s apartment by a door that has a doggie door. Earlier in the day both dogs has sniffed each other through doggy door with supervision. The landlord had taken the small dog out for a walk and Scarlett ran through the doggy door and bit the small dog. The adopter was in the bathroom at the time of the incident and it is unknown if Scarlett had shown any warnings before biting, the type of bite, or the location of the bite. The landlord was the one who separated the two dogs and stated that the small dog had 3 punctures on her side and was in surgery at the time of the surrender. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Scarlett has been reported to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Scarlett may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Anxiety: Scarlett began to display heavy panting and whining during her assessment. Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. Strength/leash pulling: Scarlett was noted to pull hard on leash during walks. Training should incorporate loose-leash walking exercises, use of appropriate equipment, and reinforcement of calm walking to improve leash manners and reduce pulling. Please see handout on Strength/leash pulling.
