Animal Profile

Shyne

Hello, my name is Shyne. My animal id is #191636. I am a male white dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 5 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/17/2024.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Shyne is on the at risk list due to behavioral concerns. Although Shyne behaves socially outside of kennel, he has a low threshold for arousal while lacking basic manners and displaying defensive aggression when unsure and/or uncomfortable, allowing minor handling with someone he finds unfamiliar. Due to his length of stay, he doesn't present well in kennel, displaying barrier frustration, hard barking and snarling at staff as they pass by and forcing his way out of kennel when leashed. Medically, Shyne is apparently healthy.

I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. Please check here for updated adoption hours.

Summary:: Due to Shyne entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 01/22/24 Shyne is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Shyne greets the novel female dog with a soft body. Due to the novel female dog's poor response, Shyne is moved away to reduce stress.

Summary (4):: 06/25/24: Shyne is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose, wiggly body when the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and led to the canine behavior office where he allows the handler to attach a drag leash. Shyne engages readily with the LATTE enrichment items. Handler releashes him and walks up and down the room with him, rewarding Shyne for walking loose leash. He walks loose leash in the hallway before beginning to pull towards the kennel room. Shyne is able to reset and walks loose leash the rest of the way to the kennel. 06/24/24: Shyne is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body as handler approaches. Handler tosses treats to move him towards back of kennel and he is leashed with ease. Shyne is brought to the Canine Behavior Office where he is easily clipped to a drag lead and is free to explore the LATTE items set out for him. He readily engages with a slow feeder and snuffle matt. Once done with the enrichment items, he solicits attention from handler, putting his front paws in their lap. He accepts pets along his head and neck. Shyne is leashed and returned to kennel safely.

Summary (5):: 06/14/24 Shyne is reported to lunge onto kennel door, hard barking and snarling. 06/10/24: Shyne had a loose wiggly body upon approach and was leashed easily. Pulls hard on walk out to play yard. Is clipped to a drag lead and allowed to explore the space. Shyne gets zoomies and runs all over the yard, bouncing from the benches to the ramps and then comes to handler soliciting attention. Handler pets Shyne and then tosses treats which he catches. Handler guides Shyne over to the stairs and ramps. He readily jumps up onto the stairs and follows tossed treats back down. This exchange continues for a short time before Shyne gets zoomies again. Is easily leashed and walks with moderate pulling. Returns to kennel safely. 6/3/24: Refer to note 5/27 - Shyne's behavior remains the same in care. 5/27/24: Shyne was leashed with ease and walked outside to the yard. Shyne was very social with handler for duration of interaction, approaching frequently with a loose, wiggly body. Handler engaged Shyne with repetitions of sit and a pattern game, rewarding him with treats that he would often catch in his mouth. Shyne began offering a sit to handler without being cued, as he had done in previous interactions with handler. Shyne started climbing the agility course, so handler lured him up and down with treats. Shyne engaged in these activities enthusiastically and was able to stay focused. Shyne pulled on the way back to kennel, so handler gave him breaks to catch his breath. He hopped straight into kennel and ate another treat. 05/20/24 As the handler approaches the kennel, Shyne is standing on his kennel door with a wagging tail. Shyne drops down to all fours before being leashed. They then proceed outside for a walk. Shyne displays a loose body while slightly pulling on leash. Shyne takes treats gently as they are administered and will sit firmly when wanting one. Shyne is returned to the facility where he enters the building and his kennel with no issue. 05/12/24 As the handler approaches Shyne's kennel, he is standing on the kennel door, vocalizing with a loose, wiggly body. He drops down to all fours and is leashed with ease. Shyne is taken for a walk. Shyne maintains his loose, wiggly body while pulling on leash. Shyne will sit firmly when wanting a treat, taking them roughly when administered. Shyne's focus is easily broken when he stares at other dogs with novel handlers by calling his name. Shyne is returned to the facility where he enters the building and his kennel with no issue. 5/6/24: See notes 4/29/24 - interaction with Shyne in the yard was much the same. Shyne was very social with handler, soliciting many pets.

Summary (6):: 4/29/24: Shyne was sleeping in kennel when handler approached. Shyne was leashed and walked to BA room, ignoring all other dogs in the room barking at him. Handler used spray cheese to encourage licking. Shyne was highly treat motivated, offering repetitions of sit and catching treats in his mouth. Shyne would chase after squeaker toys, but not retrieve them. Shyne was social with handler, jumping up on their lap with a loose, wiggly body accepting pets on his back and sides. Shyne was returned to kennel with ease. 04/21/24: When handler arrives Shyne jumps up at the door of his kennel anxiously waiting to be leashed, once Shyne is leashed handler brings him to BT room, places a drag-leash on Shyne and he begins greeting secondary handlers taking treats and listening to sit commands and participating in puzzle games and snuffle mat activities, once games are completed Shyne is returned back to his kennel with no issues safe and secure 4/14/24: Shyne was standing in kennel when handler approached, and was leashed with ease. Shyne was taken for a street walk, eagerly trying to push through the gate on his way out. Shyne pulled hard on leash, so handler came to a stop periodically to let him catch his breath, and used a treat scatter which kept him in place while handler picked up waste. Shyne was neutral when a pedestrian passed by, more interested in a grassy area. Once back on premises, another dog/handler passed by at close distance. Handler engaged Shyne in repetitions of "sit" and tossed treats for him to catch in his mouth. Shyne remained calm and focused on this activity completely ignoring distractions. Shyne was returned to kennel with ease. 04/13/24: Shyne is standing up on hind legs when handler approaches, once kennel gate is open Shyne is easily leashed and brought out for a walk, Shyne demonstrates neutral body, relaxed ears, and straight tail while wagging and hard pulling, Shyne passes two dogs on his walk and looks but continues hard pulling forward sniffing trees. Shyne and handler are walking back to the facility and Shyne is returned back to his kennel with no issues safe and secure. 03/18/24 Shyne is standing on his kennel door with a wagging tail and loose body. Shyne is leashed with ease by the handler, and they proceed outside for a walk. Shyne displays a soft frame while walking moderately beside the handler. As the walk commenced, Shyne pulls more on the leash. Shyne doesn't really take the treats administered to him. Shyne maintains a neutral pace, being returned to the facility. Shyne is relocated to a new kennel, where he enters the room and kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 3/16/24: Shyne was jumping up on kennel door when handler approached. He was able to be moved to back of kennel by tossing treats, and was then easily leashed. Shyne pulled hard outside and throughout walk. After relieving himself, Shyne jumped up on handler but quickly got down when they said "no" and kept walking. Shyne sniffed and marked throughout walk. To give Shyne a break from pulling, handler engaged him in a pattern game, which he learned quickly and was able to focus on for quite some time. Without a verbal cue needed, Shyne began offering handler repetitions of "sit" while looking up at them, to which handler would say "yes" and reward with a treat tossed down on the ground. Shyne was returned to kennel, which he jumped into willingly. As handler was locking kennel door, Shyne offered and maintained a sit which handler rewarded with a large piece of jerky. 02/20/24 Shyne is standing on his kennel door vocalizing at the handler with a wagging tail. The handler unlocks the kennel door and Shyne drops down, being leashed with ease and they proceed outside for a walk. Shyne maintains his loose, wiggly body while pulling on leash. Shyne will jump onto the handler when wanting a treat and the handler will administer a treat as long as Shyne executes the "sit" cue. Shyne will take treats gently when administered and will allow touch when pet. Shyne is returned back to the facility where he enters the building and his kennel with no issue. 2/15/24: Shyne is vocalizing and jumping in front of his kennel, he displays a tense body and open panting mouth, the handler tosses treats into his kennel, when the handler goes to leash he attempts to mouth on the rope and the handler hand. Shyne sees a novel dog and pulls towards their direction, treats are tossed which he takes. When touch he becomes overly aroused and will jump on the handler mouthy the PPE. He is taken back into the center without issue. 1/19/24: Shyne is at the front of the kennel vocalizing and panting when the handler approaches. Shyne is easily taken out and brought to the assessment room. To avoid getting him any more aroused he was brou

Summary:: loose body and was wagging his tail

Date of initial:: 1/19/2024

Summary:: Hyperactive, jumping up. Takes treats readily, allowed some handling while licking cheese off wall

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Shyne so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Shyne's handling sensitivity, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/Mouthiness- Shyne has shown some mouthiness and jumps on handler in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Shyne teeth make contact with skin). Please handout on Basic manners/Mouthiness. Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Shyne becomes easily over-aroused and head whips whenever his neck/back is handled. Shyne should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Shyne’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Shyne may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Low threshold for arousal: Shyne is observed to have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based training may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
