These concerns have been treated and Spencer is otherwise healthy. Spencer arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. While in care, he has been observed to be fearful. Noted to growl and vocalize before charging towards the handler. Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced adult only home.

Summary:: When brought into the assessment room, Spencer was observed to have a loose body and wagging tail. When the handler placed a collar on him, Spencer became slightly tense. The secondary handler was able to redirect him, while on a dragline Spencer sniffs around and jumps up on the couch. When the handler reaches under his chin to get the dragline, Spencer growls and vocalizes before jumping towards the handler. The handler retreats and Spencer charges forward toward the handler. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Spencer is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 9/15/26: Spencer is introduced to a novel intact female and is neutral at the fence while sniffing nose to nose with the other dog. He stands next to the fence remaining neutral, sniffs her from afar briefly when she walks away, and then marks on the fence line.

Summary (7):: 9/8/26: Spencer is at the front of his kennel with a loose body; he is leashed and carried out the room. On the street, Spencer notices another dog interacting with people; he watches them with a neutral forward body and disengages when the handler walks him across the street. Spencer walks with mild leash tension and no reactivity to dogs or people. upon entry, the handler brings Spencer to the office for his assessment, however it's ended early due to him snapping at the assessor (see notes). The handler returns Spencer to his kennel afterwards.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Spencer so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Spencer has been observed to be fearful while in care. Noted to growl, vocalize, and charge towards handlers. It is important to move slowly with Spencer, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people.
