Super-Pup is at risk due to behavior concerns. Super -Pup has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and remains highly fearful and shut down despite efforts to interact and socialize. His body remains tense, is reluctant to walk, but tolerates pets. He does not seek out interaction, petting, or treats. At times, he seeks out a place to hide. Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Upon intake Super-Pup was extremely fearful. When he was with his previous owner, he hid behind her and growled when staff approached her on the bench. He allowed staff to take the rope from the client but pancaked on the floor after she left the building and wasn't able to walk on his own. Staff was able to pick him up and take him to the kennel.

Date of assessment:: 12/7/2024

Summary:: Due to Superpup's fearfulness displayed in care, a handling assessment was not preformed at this time.

Summary:: According to Super-Pups previous owners, super-pup is playful and outgoing with familiar dogs. With unfamiliar dogs on leash he hard stares and can hard bark at them. He has no experience with unfamiliar dogs off leash. He has lived with 4 other dogs. 12/15/24 Super-Pup is introduced to multiple novel small mixed breed dogs while off leash at the care center. Super-Pup is extremely nervous displaying a tucked tail and whale eyes. He remains stiff and avoidant, sitting behind a handler. Super-Pup is fearful, seeking attention from the handler present and not leaving their side. Due to Super-Pups fearfulness, he is returned to his kennel.

Summary (7):: 12/16/24 Super-Pup is sitting stiff in the back corner of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed but whale-eyes the handler when they slowly reach towards his body to pick him up. The handler puts a towel over him and carries him to the behavior room. Super-Pup is placed on the floor in the room and the towel is removed and he begins to tremble all over. The handler puts a soothing hand on his back and then walks away and Super-Pup takes a few steps closer to them before freezing and shaking once more. The handler sits near him and talks in a soft voice while reaching out a hand and Super-Pup ignores them. As he continues to tremble, handler 2 places the towel over his body and head. Super-Pup pokes his head out to watch the handlers but remains shaking in place. As the handler reaches to leash him, he whale-eyes once again before he freezes but allows the process. The handler picks him up in his towel and safely returns Super-Pup to his kennel. 12/15/24: Super-Pup sat in back of kennel with a hunched posture and wide eyes as handler leashed him. He mildly flailed as handler picked him up and lifted him out of kennel. Once placed on the floor he walked to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Super-Pup appeared to seek comfort from handler by burrowing into/under them. Handler sat crouched beside Super-Pup and he hid under their legs when approached by other dogs. Handler kept the other dogs at a distance and picked him up. Super-Pup appeared comfortable as he was carried back to kennel. 12/9/24: Super-Pup ran through transfer door to opposite side of kennel as handler unlocked door. Handler closed transfer door and tossed a treat into kennel which he did not eat. Super-Pup sat in back corner of kennel, trembling with wide eyes. He tolerated pets and the slip leash and was lifted out in a blanket. Once placed on the floor he froze and began lowering his body, so handler picked him up and carried him in the blanket. Super-Pup felt tense with his front legs outstretched. Handler placed him back on the floor in a quiet hall but he only took a couple of steps before freezing in place. Handler carried him the rest of the way to the live room. When a second handler entered the room he pancaked. Super-Pup did not take treats and did not seem to relax when placed on handler's lap in a blanket. He hid under a chair in the corner of the room trembling. He accepted pets on his head from a familiar handler on the way back to kennel. 12/6/24: Superpup was approached in kennel and when in kennel begins to shy away, shake and hide into the corner of his kennel growling. The handler begins to greet him at the front, offering treats to which he does not eat and continues to growl. The handler leashes him and he begin to growl louder, to which the handler halts what he is doing and leaves Superpup more time to decompress and acclimate to his new kennel until later.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Superpup s described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Super pup

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Superpup's fearfulness in care, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Superpup's fearfulness in care, we recommend he is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Superpup gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away, there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Super Pup, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Super Pup to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Super Pup would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. See handouts on Decompression Period and Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
