Eyvindr came into the care center as a stray after being found tied outside. A police officer brought him in and then reported that he was fearful and growled at them. QACC was able to contact his previous owners, who stated that they were no longer his owners as they had rehomed him the previous week due to having children in their home. In the care center, Eyvinder has not acclimated well and has shown fearful behavior seeking exit during socialization sessions and beginning to show arousal behaviors such as jumping on the helper and leash biting and while standing against the helper with their paws on the handler's chest just shortly after arriving in the room. Eyvindr would benefit from placement with a rescue through one of our New Hope partners. A volunteer writes: Eyvindr's name means luck and warrior and he's in desperate need of the former. He shows us he's a little warrior, that in spite of his current predicament, he's trying to make the best of it. He absolutely loves toys, tennis balls being his first choice, squeaky balls being the crown jewel. In true puppy fashion he frolics after them, ears bouncing in the wind, eventually settling down to chew on them, butt up in the air in an adorable downward dog position. He gives us brief bouts of snuggles, resting his floppy jowls in our hands, accepting treats gently. While we only got to experience the carefree side of Eyvindr, he's been understandably stressed in the shelter, leading to overarousal and leash biting. Eyvindr has had a rough go in his only 7 months of life. He's been rehomed, and most recently tied up to be found by police hours later. We learn that his original name is lightning. Hfriendly with dogs he knows and while on leash, crate trained for a few hours, he loves bath time and he enjoys playing with socks and rope toys. His guardian's favorite thing about him are his eyes.

Date of intake:: 2/10/2025

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray (Limited History)

Date of assessment:: 2/12/2025

Summary:: 2/12-Once in the behavior office for a handling assessment, he quickly became aroused, jumping on the helper and leash biting and while standing against the helper with their paws on the handler's chest just shortly after arriving in the room. Due to the quick escalation, handlers opted to postpone the assessment. 2/11- Once in the behavior office for a handling assessment, he began to pace around the room seeking exit and heavy panting. He ignores the treats offered to him and began to jump on the assessor and handler. Eyvinder is taken back into his kennel and give more time to decompress.

Summary:: Due to Eyvindr entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 02/14/25: When off leash at the Care Center Eyvindr is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate Eyvindr approaches with a stiff frame and drooling. Both males mark the gate immediately and simultaneously. Eyvindr scents the novel male with his paw raised. Both males chase one another along the gate, while the novel male displays a flagging tail. Eyvindr begins low growling as he paws at the gate. Eyvindr begins fixating on the novel male until he is guided away from the gate. Both dogs are separated. Due to both males discomfort a face to face greet was not conducted. 02/13/25: When off leash at the Care Center Eyvindr is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Eyvindr approaches with a neutral frame. Eyvindr scents the novel female before loosing interest. Eyvindr wanders along the gate displacement scenting before walking away from the gate. Eyvindr seeks out the handler. Due to Eyvindr disinterest a face to face greet was not conducted.

Summary (7):: 02/25/25 Eyvindr is sitting firmly in his kennel as the handler approaches. Eyvindr is leashed with ease as he comes forward. They proceed outside for a walk. Eyvindr displays a neutral body as he trots moderately beside the handler. Eyvindr will see dogs at a distance with novel handlers and watch them. When they are out of sight, he will commence walking. Eyvindr will sit gently when wanting a treat, taking them gently when administered. Eyvindr and the handler will proceed walking, allowing Eyvindr to sniff and explore different areas before returning back to the facility. Eyvidnr will enter the building with no issue and upon coming up on his kennel, a toy is tossed inside of it, and he will quickly follow. 02/20/25 (staff report): It is reported that Eyvindr began kennel fighting while exiting the room and redirected, mouthing handler's leg and releasing (no broken skin). Eyvindr is quickly returned to kennel. 02/19/25 (Trainer Note): Evyindr is standing neutrally at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Evyindr maintains a loose body throughout the interaction and engages readily with the various enrichment items. He softens further over time. Handler begins to wait for orienting to move onto the next item and then orienting and taking a breath. Evyindr engages readily. He pulls mildly back to kennel. Evyindr balks at the front of the kennel. Handler uses treats but he still refuses so leash pressure is used to return him to kennel. He allows the leash to be removed and begins to eat the scattered treats. 02/14/25: Eyvindr is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls hard out to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). Eyvindr spends time scenting along the yard and is returned to kennel safely. 2/12/25: Eyvindr greeted hander at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. He hesitated before passing through thresholds on the way to the BA room for his assessment. Once in the room handler 2 approached with a collar. Eyvindr jumped up on handler 1 and began leash biting while resting his front paws on them. Due to Eyvindr having been in the room less than a minute before displaying this behavior, handlers opted to postpone assessment. Eyvindr stopped leash biting on his own and did not make any additional attempts to leash bite. Handlers walked him back to kennel room where he waited in hall while his kennel was cleaned. He resisted handler 1's attempts to guide him into kennel using directional leash pressure. The leash was handed off to handler 2 who was able to guide him in.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to his arousal behavior we recommended Eyvindr is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner- Eyvindr came into the care center as a stray after being found tied outside.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- Eyvindr has shown to jump on handlers.Start by teaching him the "sit" cues to replace jumping behavior. Use positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, when he sits calmly instead of jumping. Consistently ignore jumping by turning away and only give attention when all four paws are on the ground. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/Anxiety- Eyvindr has shown pacing and seeking exit when taken out form socialization sessions. Use positive reinforcement to reward calm behavior and gradually desensitize him to socialization by starting with short, low-stress sessions and gradually increasing their duration. Provide plenty of mental and physical stimulation through interactive toys and regular exercise to help manage his energy levels. Please see the handout on decompression period and generalized anxiety. Leash-biting- Eyvindr has been shown to leash bite.Start by using a sturdy, non-retractable leash and avoid playing tug-of-war games with it. Redirect his attention with treats or a favorite toy when he starts to bite the leash. Please see the handout on leash biting. Strength/leash pulling- Eyvindr will pull hard on the lead.Teach him loose-leash walking by stopping or changing direction whenever he pulls, rewarding him with treats and praise when he walks calmly beside you. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling. Low threshold for arousal-Eyvindr jumped on the helper and leash biting and while standing against the helper with their paws on the handler's chest just shortly after arriving in the room.A low threshold for arousal in dogs means they become excited or overstimulated very quickly and with minimal provocation. This can manifest in behaviors such as jumping, barking, leash biting, or other impulsive actions. Dogs with a low arousal threshold often have difficulty calming down once they become excited.
