Keiko
Hello, my name is Keiko. My animal id is #246873. I am a female gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/4/2026.
Keiko is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Keiko arrived at the Care Center as a stray with limited history. Upon arrival Keiko was noted to be fearful during her handling assessment, but allowed contact for a medical exam and was social with staff. With handlers Keiko has remained treat receptive, loose and wiggly for pets, and enjoys her time outside with handlers. Despite efforts to keep her comfortable, Keiko has been showing signs of deterioration. Keiko has been observed to be biting kennel bars, heavily pant in kennel, and at times has been noted to be vocalizing in kennel. Additionally, Keiko has shown signs of decreasing threshold for arousal due to her kennel frustration; occasionally jumping on handlers needing to be stiff armed away. Medically, Keiko is noted to be underweight but is otherwise apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! Volunteer Note on 02/26/35: Keiko is super treat-motivated. She sits nicely and waits patiently until treats are served, takes them gently, and stays seated in hopes of earning another one. She accepts gentle head scratches, but what she really loves are butt scratches. Her tail starts wagging, and she circles back to lean her backside in, clearly asking for more. Sweet girl who knows exactly what she likes!

Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Keiko to her kennel.

The handler brings her to the driveway, where she pulls moderately. After Keiko relieves herself, she jumps on the handler with a loose body. She also doesn’t show interest in fellow familiar handlers. The handler then brings Keiko to the yard and places her on the drag leash. There, she runs back in forth in the yard; however, she stops when she sees a few small birds, continues to run after they fly away. Keiko then begins to bite on the drag leash as she runs around. The handler distracts her by calling her into a sit position. As Keiko sits, the handler places their leash and removes the drag. As they bring her inside, Keiko refuses to enter her kennel. The handler tosses treats into her kennel, and Keiko walks in there with ease. 2/13/26: Keiko is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Keiko so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children under 5: Due to fearful behaviors observed in the handling assessment, we recommend a home with no young children.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful- Keiko is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Keiko the option to walk away from any social interaction. Keiko should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Pam’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Keiko would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
