Animal Profile

Magneto

Hello, my name is Magneto. My animal id is #248301. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/25/2026.

Magneto is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Magneto displays intense kennel fighting lunging and barking toward other dogs when exiting the kennel and moving through the kennel room, almost coming into contact with another dog. He also shows discomfort with handling and remains tense during interactions with staff, but has slowly warmed up to select staff and enjoying interactions with them. Medically, Magneto is apparently healthy.

It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners.

My medical notes are...

Date of intake:: 2/25/2026

Date of initial:: 2/26/2026

Summary:: nervous, took treats readily, body tense

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Magneto is placed in a adult only home at this time. SINGLE-PET HOME/ RECOMMEND NO DOG PARKS: Due to the concerning behaviors that Magneto has shown in care -including significant kennel fighting and dog reactivity- we feel that Magneto should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Magneto associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.

Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Magneto is noted to take treats with mild pressure.Training should focus on teaching gentle treat-taking and reinforcing calm, controlled interactions to encourage softer mouth use. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety: In the care cneter Magneto is noted to display a flushed face, heavy panting, and pacing behavior. Training should emphasize predictable routines, calming enrichment, and reinforcing relaxed behavior to help him regulate stress more effectively. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: In the care center, Magento is noted to fight in the kennel when coming out of the kennel room. Training should focus on structured, low-arousal exit routines, increasing distance from kennel-side triggers, and rewarding calm engagement when leaving the kennel. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling: Magneto is noted to hard pull on walks.Using tools like a no-pull harness and consistent leash training can help manage his pulling behavior. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling.
