Animal Profile

Justice

Hello, my name is Justice. My animal id is #223073. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/8/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - not house trained.

Justice is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Justice tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. A volunteer writes: Justice has made some friends here at the shelter and these friends care a whole lot about him and his success. Success, of course, looks different for everyone but we've learned a lot about Justice by meeting him where he is and learning what works for him. The hustle and bustle of the shelter doesn't, but a little cover on his condo has done wonders in making him feel more comfortable. Along with treats and offers of pets, these steady enhancements have allowed us to watch Justice grow and learn in his less than ideal circumstances. Accepting pets and even sometimes leaning into them, Justice can sometimes be seen making his own fun by playing with his snacks. Justice has lived with other cats and is reportedly friendly and outgoing with them and while you probably won't see him dancing around at the front of his condo, he's certainly trying his best.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/14/25 FB61 On perch, body and face a tense, pupils dilated, ears tilted and feet and tail tucked. He maintains eye contact as I open the kennel door and although he sniffs the treats and enrichment toy offered he remains too focused on me to engage with them furhter. I slow-blink and speak to him softly before ending the session. He is tolerant of petting while flinching hard and leaning away. 4/18/25 FB79 Today, Justice displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note. Hissing loudly while crouched next to his litter box with flat ears, wide/dilated eyes and a tight tail. He continued to hiss when i spoke softly but the room was loud and a lot of movement was happening so i closed the cubby door and resected his space for the day. 4/20/25 Vol. Justice was in his clean litter box, hunched up, with his head lowered, nearly concealing his eyes. As I opened the door, he began to grumble. I placed treats and a catnip mouse near him. He sniffed them but did eat or play. I petted him with a pipe cleaner, then with my hand. He remained stiff and unresponsive, but allowed the contact. He stopped grumbling, so he may just need a slow approach to gain his confidence. 4/24/25 FB58 Sitting on his shelf at the back with a tense face and body, hisses as I open the cage door - very tense with eyes wide. He sniffs the hand I offer out to him and hisses again. Tolerant of pets with the scratcher tool but remains tense. I offer squeeze up which he sniffs but doesn't eat. 4/27/25 Vol. Justice was at the back of the ledge. He hissed when the kennel door was opened. He did not eat the treats or Squeeze Up offered to him. I spoke softly to him until he stopped hissing. I petted him with a pipe cleaner, which he tolerated. He made a move towards the door as if to get away, so I closed the door and ended the interaction. I lifted the covering on the kennel door and he hissed again. He was not interested in socializing today. 5/07/25 FB61 Sitting upright on perch, ears flat and face tense. He focuses on me and flattens his ears even further as I open the kennel door and he lowers his body and flinches when offered treats. After a few moments of slow-blinks and sweet talk he shifts his ears forward sightly to sniff the treats but he remains too focused on me to engage with them further. 5/9/25 FB79 On the top part of his kennel, Justice sits with his paws tucked away, slightly wide eyes and his tail loose; however he wraps his tail around his body when i open the kennel door and speak. Justice lip licks as he leans in to sniff my hand but fully leans into chin and cheek rubs as he sits with his tail loosely wrapped around his legs, softer eyes and looks at the room behind me. He remains on the top part of the kennel but allows and enjoyed all pets as he leaned in, started to purr and scanned around the environment. His new kennel cover seems to be helping and he is most tolerate and acceptant of pets and affection. GAN

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On the top part of his kennel, Justice has wide eyes, a tightly wrapped tail with his tucked paws. He slow blinks when the assessor speaks to him but starts to lip lick when they slowly bring in their hand for him to sniff. He has no interest in any treats offered and when the assessor reaches over in attempt to pet he flinches as he backs his head away. Justice remains very still and wide eyes when being pet on his head/cheeks as well as down and around his body and his ears tilt as he fixates on the room and noises behind the assessor. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 5/11/25 FB79 On the top part of his kennel, Justice has neutral eyes, forward ears and a wrapped tial but his eyes quickly dilate when the assessor approaches and speaks to him softly; his eyes tilt and he begins to lip lick as the kennel door us opened. Justice hissed when treats were placed down in front of him and did not break eye contact with the assessor as he closely watched for any further movement. He flinched and hissed once again when the assessor slowly brought the pointer tool closer in attempt to pet and when begin pet down his back he raised his paw and harshrlt swatted it away. Pick up was not attempted. Justice tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
