Titan
Hello, my name is Titan . My animal id is #210610. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/22/2024.
Titan is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Titan is struggling within the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Titan in care has been stressed in his kennel, pulling his water bucket in and having a poor kennel precense at times, jumping and hard barking at his door. Titan also has a history of snapping when his neck his touched in care. Medically, Titan is apparently healthy.

Titan came into the care as a stray so his history is unknown, the finder found him tied to a fence and brought him to the care center. Titan has shown to allow some handling with certain staff members and to be playful with dogs during playgroup but On multiple occasions, he became reactive when handlers attempted to attach leashes or drag leads to his collar, snapping and growling. Titan also demonstrated significant arousal, including jumping on handlers and being unable to settle during interactions.While he allowed some handling when distracted with treats, Titan's stress levels escalated quickly, leading to defensive behaviors such as head-whipping and growling. Titan's behavior suggests he may be fearful of handling, particularly around his neck area, and his high arousal levels. He will benefit from a patient and experienced foster or adopter who can work with him using positive reinforcement and desensitization techniques to help him become more comfortable with touch and handling. . A volunteer writes: Titan was the best sort of surprise. Just 2 years old, Titan has been quite terrified at the shelter. So scared that he couldn't be assessed due to his stress. So when we took him out we weren't quite sure what to expect. What we got was the most precious little man who took up residence on one of our laps and didn't budge from his spot. He gently pawed at a toy we offered him, but mostly just smushed closer and closer in, resting his jowls into the crook of an arm. It was painful to return him to his kennel. Titan is the kind of dog we show up for, that finds solace sitting next to a friend on a stoop, and we hope he finds that outside of the shelter and soon. Titan was found tied to a fence with a bowl of food next to him. When his finders approached he wagged and leg them untie him. They brought him home and gave him a bath and brought him to the shelter the next day. While Titan hasn't allowed much handling, and is specifically fearful of having a leash attached to his collar, he did well meeting another dog. They began playing with loose bodies, running around together. Titan rolled over to let his playmate take a turn and then popped up again to run around.

Summary:: Due to Titan entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 11/25/24 Titan is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Titan will approach the gate aroused, not being able to settle, running back and forth while spring boarding off of handlers that are present. Titan will display sexual motivation as he greets the novel female at the gate, tracking her as she paces back and forth. Titan is not able to regulate his arousal, jumping excessively onto a handler that leads to him nipping at the handlers clothing. At this point, Titan is returned to kennel.
Summary (6):: 11/23/24: Titan is at the back of his kennel laying down when the handler approaches, is easily leashed and brought out for a street walk. Titan pulls very hard outside, unable to settle on his own, pacing and panting heavily throughout the walk. Titan will readily engage for treats, but when administered from the handlers hand, he will begin to take them hard and is instead tossed on the ground, where he frantically eats them. Titans behavior remains the same on the walk, pulling very hard and not reacting to any dog/stranger that happens to pass. Titan is brought back to his kennel with no issue. 11/22/24: Titan is observed to have pulled his water bowls into his kennel, with visible teeth marks on them. 11/17/24: Titan was leashed with ease and taken for a walk on the street. Titan pulled moderately towards other dogs passing at close distance. Titan faced handler and offered a sit at the crossing which they rewarded with a liver treat. Titan relieved himself while outside. Titan consistently offered a sit at each crossing without being cued. He appeared to have some difficulty holding the sit and would roll his hip to the side. Titan was returned to kennel with ease. 11/13/24: Titan is seen by behavior jumping up at handler's face while in the play yard, BT member will shout and his focus is redirected and behavior will order handler to grab the drag leash him and returned him back to his kennel. 11/10/24: Titan is loose and wiggly standing at the front of his kennel and will be leashed with ease and brought to the play yard for enrichment. Handler will toss soft toys back and forth for Titan to retrieve them. Titan will run back and forth until he is tired then will paste the yard looking for the perfect spot to relieve himself. Titan will be brought back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely. 10/15/24 Titan is at the front of his kennel sitting firmly as the handler approaches. Titan is easily leashed as he forces his way out of the kennel. Titan will pull his way out of the building. Titan displays a still, neutral frame as he pulls his way towards the play yard. Titan and the handler will engage in the "find it" game, as the handler tosses treats for Titan to seek out. They will do this over the course of them being in the play yard. Titan is returned to kennel where he pulls his way back into the building and his kennel.
Summary (7):: 10/4/24: Titan is observed to be sitting in his kennel with a neutral body, but has pulled his entire water tray into his kennel. 10/02/24: Titan is standing at the front of is kennel jumping up pawing at the glass door. Titan will be taken out and escorted to the play yard to meet a playmate where a drag leash will be placed on him and Titan will be brought into the yard of his playmate and the will begin playing while handler holds the lead. Once confirmed the two playmate are displaying loose frame as they play drag leashes will be dropped and Titan an d his playmate will run around the yard house playing. Titan will roll over allowing his playmate to take control of play then will jump back up and continue running around the yard. Titan will be escorted back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely with no issues. 9/30: Staff report that they have seen Titan pull his water/feeder bowl fixture into his kennel several times. 9/26/2024: (late entry) Titan is taken to the assessment room for a handling assessment when a handler went to clip the leads to his collar he began to snap twice with a tense body and low growl. on leash he is pacing heavy panting and begins to jump on handlers. He is taken back to his kennel due to him not being able to settle 9/25/2024: ( late entry) Titan is taken to the assessment room for an assessment the displays heavy panting, and red eyes and begins to pace and jump on the handler. Summary:: playful, allowed for handling and tasks
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Titan's behavior challenges we recommend he be placed in an adult-only home at this time.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- Titan displayed excessive jumping onto handlers.Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/ Low threshold for arousal- While he allowed some handling when distracted with treats, Titan's stress levels escalated quickly, leading to defensive behaviors such as head-whipping and growling and snapping. Titan's behavior suggests he may be fearful of handling, particularly around his neck.To help Titan become more comfortable with handling, especially around his neck, a gradual desensitization and counter-conditioning plan is recommended. Start by associating gentle touch with high-value treats, beginning with less sensitive areas and slowly progressing towards his neck. Keep sessions short and positive, ensuring Titan remains relaxed. Gradually increase the duration and intensity of handling as he becomes more comfortable. Incorporate regular breaks and observe his body language closely to prevent stress escalation. Consistency and patience are key, and consulting with a professional trainer or behaviorist can provide additional support and guidance tailored to Titan's specific needs. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/ Low threshold for arousal. Kennel presence- Titan is reported to pull bowl into his kennel. He is also reported to jumping up and paw at the glass door.
