Kenny
Hello, my name is Kenny. My animal id is #222229. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 4/10/2025.
Kenny is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She/He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! Kenny is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he does attempt to flee or avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. A volunteer writes: Kenny has asked us for a little guide on how to do and how to be. We only wish we had one to offer. He came to us from a home with many other cats and his efforts to navigate Care Center life have left him a little stumped. He prefers to keep to his den, which doesn't offer him many chances to meet new people and though he seems to like it that way, he could probably use the practice. This is especially true because he likely hasn't had many opportunities to meet new people and isn't always sure what to make of us. When we try to say hello and offer our friendship, Kenny tends to grumble as he makes himself as small as he possibly can. Kenny's hoping to find a patient and loving home where he can learn how to be the best cat he can be.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/20/25 FB79 Inside of his den, Kenny has a tense body with his tail wrapped around his body and wide/dilated eyes. He leans into sniff the tool and tolerates pets on his head and cheeks with no reaction. I leave him some treats for later. 4/20/25 Vol. Kenny was in his den. He grumbled when I lifted the cover. I put treats inside the den but he showed no interest in them. I was able to pet him with a pipe cleaner but he did not react in any way. When the interaction was over, he laid down in the den, watching me through the doorway. 4/24/25 FB58 In his den and hisses with tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. He pressed himself into the back of the den and hisses. I offer dry treats in the den and outside the portal opening but he remains tense and frozen at the back of the den. 4/27/25 Vol. Kenny was in his den. When I lifted the cover, he turned around to avoid me. He began to grumble. I placed Temptations inside the den, which he ate. Each time I moved my hand towards him, he grumbled more, so I ended the interaction. I closed the door and saw him watching me through the den opening. Needs time to adapt. 5/07/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body crouched and ears forward. When I open the kennel door and lift his den cover he immediately sits up and turns as if wanting to flee. I lower his den cover and he pokes his head out to watch me with a tense expression as I offer him treats. He smells them, makes eye contact with me and then retreats back into his den. I speak to him softly and end the session. When I check on him later the treats have been eaten. 5/14/25 FB61 Displayed similar behaviors as previous sessions. 5/23/25 FB79 Kenny has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. She is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior.

Client stated he is using the litter box to poop but will pee and spray on the corners of furniture and clothes but please keep in mind that no further details were provided in regards to the possible stressors in the environment or if behavior modifications were attempted to try and prevent this from continuing. 4/29/25 FB32 During to two week litter box observation period, Kenny appropriately eliminated every day and there were no accidents reported. ______________________________ Kenny is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques. "Spirit cats" in a shelter context refer to cats who are very shy with people, preferring to live in a quiet environment and interacting with other cats rather than humans. They are often a good choice for patient, kind individuals who can create a safe and comfortable space for them to thrive. We cannot be certain whether or not Kenny will warm up to socialization in shelter or in a home environment and clients should be counseled on the potential of Kenny being a Spirit Cat.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Kenny would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Inside of his den, Kenny can be heard hissing when the assessor opens the kennel door and speaks softly; he is pressed up to the back of the den with wide/dilated eyes and a tightly wrapped tail when the den cover is lifted for a better. Kenny hisses when treats are tossed near the den door as well as when the scratcher tool is slowly introduced for petting. He very closely stares at the tool watching it get closer and harshly hisses at it when it is run down and around his body as well as when it used to briefly pet on his head and cheeks. Kenny tolerates very brief petting down his back once again before he snaps his head and hisses at the tool and begins to lip lick. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 4/14/25 FB79 Inside of his den, Kenny can be heard hissing when the assessor opens the kennel door and speaks; he is crouched at the back corner of the den with his tail tightly wrapped and his ears slightly tilted. When the assessor speaks once again and slow blinks he hisses and starts to low growl/grumble when they slowly introduce their hand into the den to pet. Kenny does tolerate petting on his head/cheeks as well as down and around his body but remains very tense with hunched in shoulders and lip licks with wide dilated eyes. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 5/15/25 Upon re-eval, Kenny is in hid den and hidden from view - he hisses when dry treats are placed down and cannot be coaxed out when spoken to softly. When the den cover is lifted, he presses against the back of the den with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated. He tenses and low growls when the scratcher tool is introduced and he is tolerant of a few pets before running out of the den. He loafs next to the den with a tense face and body and again tolerated a few pets as he low growled before he jumps up onto the den and then into the cubby, pick up is not attempted.
