Animal Profile

Pixie

Hello, my name is Pixie. My animal id is #230513. I am a desexed female black cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 11 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/10/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Pixie is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. When approached she will hiss swat and flee. Due to her stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically, Pixie is overweight, but apparently healthy.

Energy level/descriptors: Medium Other notes: Pixie will struggle, squirm, hiss, growl and stress meow when having her nails trimmed. She will struggle, squirm, bite, hiss and growl when being picked/held. She is unbothered when having her coat brushed or placed in a carrier. Pixie is an adult indoor female cat with a solitary and withdrawn temperament, who prefers social interaction strictly on her own terms. She is typically fearful and observant, often watching from afar rather than engaging directly, and tends to hide when feeling overwhelmed. Pixie spends most of her time in quiet areas such as the living room, bedroom, kitchen, or by the window. While she rarely engages in interactive play, she shows interest in gentle solo activities such as chasing and pouncing on toys or feet. She enjoys scratching on cardboard, cat trees, and carpet-like materials. Although once energetic and friendly in her early years, Pixie has become more apprehensive and less interactive over time. She occasionally seeks out affection when someone is seated, preferring light petting and butt scratches, though this is complicated by hygiene challenges due to her lack of self-grooming. Behavioral concerns include hissing, vocalizing frequently, hiding in fear, and urinating when picked up. Pixie eats both wet and dry food without preference for brand and enjoys most treats. Despite her current challenges, Pixie’s earlier affectionate behavior suggests she may thrive in a quiet, patient home where she feels safe and respected.

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Pixie has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Pixie is in the back of her kennel with dilated pupils and tail curled around her body. When the door is opened she stands and scurries to the other side of her kennel. The scratch tool is placed in front of her nose she sniffs it fora second and as assessors moves it to pet her she hisses and swats at the tool very hard beginning to growl. Pixie is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, scratch and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. She may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
