Resource guarding:: Resource guarding: Mr.Milo is noted in the prior home to resouce guard his food from children and has escalated to snapping at children in the home when they approach his food. The owner stated he will have a tense body and hover over the food initially, then will growl or hard bark, and finally snap or attempt to bite if he deems it necessary after the initial warnings are not respected. They stated he has only displayed this with the resident child and not with the owner but they has also not attempted to take or touch his food.

Energy level/descriptors:: Mr.Milo is noted to have a Very high (more active than most) energy level in the prior home.

Other Notes:: Knows to relieve himself outside during walks or on wee-wee pads but can have indoor accidents if not taken outside in time. He jumps up often/non-stop, is anxious when left alone, and while on walks he barks at moving objects such as bikes, skateboards, and scooter, or at people who approach his family. He will also do this when people approach his home or yard. He is unbothered by being held, restrained, disturbed when sleeping, being moved from furniture, having his paws touched or collar grabbed. He has never been startled. He is described as a social, affectionate, very active, and playful dog who spends most of his time where his people are in the home. He sleeps in his crate at night, allows his family to bathe him, brush him, and trim his nails, he pulls very little on his leash during his usual 10min long walks he goes on twice a day, and he is accustomed to spending up to 8hrs in a medium sized crate. He knows the cues: sit, paw, stay, go to your cage, come here, up, lay down, stop, go, and where is your toy. He loves going for a car ride, is very clingy with those he loves, rolls on his back and moves his paws quickly when he wants attention. He loves plushies and peanut butter flavored treats but will also eat raw hides, dried duck strips, and beef collagen. He likes going on walks and going shopping with his family, he is said to sit in the cart and not bark throughout his time at the store.

Summary:: 7/29/26: Mr.Milo was taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment, the handler reported to the assesor that mr.milo began to snap when thrash when picked up. Mr. Milo begins gator rolling, flailing in the air, landing on his back while using his front feet to hold the lead while snapping and vocalizing. Due to him becoming tangled in the lead, a second Handler places their lead on him and the first one is removed. Due to his behavior, attempts are made to return him to the kennel. Due to his escalation in behavior a handling assessment will not be condcuted at this time.

Summary (7):: 7/29: A handler is in the behavior office when a second handler walks in holding Mr. Milo. They reported that he was difficult to remove from his kennel due to him escalating to lunging, snapping, and dodging leashing attempts. He is placed on the floor and begins flailing and thrashing at the slightest tension on the leash that he is creating himself due to his behavior. Mr. Milo begins gator rolling, flailing in the air, landing on his back while using his front feet to hold the lead while snapping and vocalizing. Due to him becoming tangled in the lead, a second Handler places their lead on him and the first one is removed. Due to his behavior, attempts are made to return him to the kennel. A third handler covers him with a towel to pick him up, but he begins thrashing and snapping under the towel, nearly catching the handler's hands/fingers. Due to this, he was walked back to the kennel on lead, which he willingly follows. Once in the room, handlers make attempts to return him to his top kennel, but he continues to flail and snap before eventually wedging himself under the second handler's knee. The second handler briefly touches his flank; he flinches but tolerates the contact, pressing closer. They slowly increase the length of their touch, slowly working their way to his side. Doing this, they can quickly pick him up, but he begins thrashing, head whipping and snapping, catching the handler's chest mostly their clothing. He is placed back into his top kennel, and a hook is used to remove the lead. No broken skin.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Mr. Milo's behavior concerns, we reccomend he is placed in an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Mr.Milo came into the care center as an owner surrender due to not having time for him and developing allergies. In the prior home he is noted to Resource Guard with children in the home. His prior owners noted that he is a social, affectionate, very active, and playful dog who spends most of his time where his people are in the home. He loves going for a car ride, is very clingy with those he loves, rolls on his back and moves his paws quickly when he wants attention. Mr.Milo has not adjusted to the care center environment and has allowed minimal handling and escalated to thrashing, vocalizing, and snapping at handlers when leashed or picked up. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
