Muchi
Hello, my name is Muchi. My animal id is #42662. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 11 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/27/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.
Muchi is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Prior Assessment on 05/04/2025: Muchi is a shy, timid, and independent cat. She was hiding in the den lying down and hisses at the assessor with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes when removing the den cover. She steps back and sniffs treats offered on the scratcher tool but softly hisses when pet on the head. She lowers her head with her ears tilted to the side and continues to repeatedly softly hiss when receiving cheek rubs. She lip licks, looks back, softly hisses again, and begins when stroking her body and applying gentle upward pressure on her side and chest. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. 6/6/25 Vol. One eye is runny and she is sneezing. Out in main cage sticking paws through - retreated into bottom cubby with activity in the room. Came right up for squeeze treat bowl, dodging any hand interaction while eating - she pulled back to sit erect when finished. Approached with scratcher tool, Muchi resisted at first, sniffing, dodging, lifting paw to push away and a few gentle tool nibbles but finally crouched down and allowed head and chin scratches with tool. She did not come out of a crouch but stretched out neck for chin scratches. Gave plenty of scratches and sweet talk and ended interaction. 6/7/25 Vol. Muchi is sitting upright in the back of the cubby, tail wrapped loosely, eyes, ears, whiskers neutral. Ignores the squeeze up treat on the tool, rising up further and tightening her tail to avoid being pet by the tool. She batted lightly at my extended finger but continued to look out with soft eyes. She hesitated before gobbling up some temptations dropped in front of her, allowed some brief petting while snacking, then batted at my hand again. A bit conflicted. 6/10/25 Vol. Hiding behind her privacy sheet. No interest in Squeeze-ups; hissed and swatted at the clicker. But did enjoy eating the canned tuna. No interest in the cat dancer or laser. 6/13/25 Vol. n bottom cubby, crouched behind privacy paper - sitting up erect in the back when it was removed. Opened cubby door and she looked at treat bowl but did not come forward. Allowed head scratches with tool after sniffing and examining it carefully. Allowed head and chin scratches, stretching neck out and, at times, rubbing and bumping and at other times, looking at it warily. She finally came forward to sniff treat bowl (as if it was not to her liking) but came forward a little more - I approached with hand and she lifted paw as if to bat it away and retreated. Stayed still until attention diverted and ended interaction. Came back a little later - he was on top of hidey box, alert, head up, eyes and ears normal Opened door, Ernie hissed and watched as put in treat bowl - he then jumped down to lunge and swat at door and hand (did not make any contact)Removed and swung door closed. Distracted Ernie as closed door completely and put on carabiner so he would not lunge again Ended interaction
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Curious,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to fearfulness and bite/scratch history.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Muchi was in her kennel lying with a tense body when the assessor approached. Muchi immediately hissed, and lunged as the assessor opened the door to her kennel. The assessor did not try to push forward with petting or physical contact. Muchi continued to growl and hiss a for a couple of minutes and then calmed down, keeping a tense body and lip licking for the rest of the interaction. Muchi tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center and reported in the previous home with a bite/scratch history, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
