Animal Profile

Eclipse

Hello, my name is Eclipse. My animal id is #234429. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/15/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Eclipse is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Eclipse arrived at the Care Center as a stray and was fearful during his intake. Eclipse has shown improvement with familiar handlers, allowing to be leashed, and tolerant of some contact since his arrival. Eclipse has shown kennel reactivity since early in his stay, notably growling at neighboring kennels when returning to kennel, and hard stare at dogs when on leash. Recently however, Eclipse has shown increased reactivity to dogs and has escalated to make it difficult to handle him safely. During the morning walk of 9/3/25, when returning from a morning walk Eclipse was observed to kennel fight- trying to pull towards occupied kennels with tense body and open mouth, treats and toys were ineffective at redirecting him; Eclipse then tried to redirect with open mouth toward handlers mid-section and to be stiff-armed away for safety and muscled into kennel. Medically, Eclipse is noted to have dental disease, recovering from CIRDC, and is noted to be underweight.

Summary:: Eclipse has been observed to be tense and aloof with handlers when they are interacting with him. However he will escalate to growling. When brought into the assessment room Eclipse was tense and avoidant of the handler. Maintaining his distance and was not receptive to coaxing, squeaky sounds, or multiple types of treats. When the handler attempted to collar him, Eclipse would dodge it and create space from the handler. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Eclipse is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: 8/27/25: Eclipse greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and soft tail wag. Off leash, he makes attempts to mount the other dog.

Summary (5):: 09/03/25: After morning walk, upon re-entering kennel room, Eclipse began kennel fighting when passing occupied kennels. He attempted to redirect onto handler several times and was stiff-armed away and muscled back into kennel. 9/2/25: PM WALK: Eclipse is lying down in kennel with his head pressed against the door. Handler approaches and he stands up quickly. With a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and exits the kennel with a neutral body. He is brought to street where he walks besides the handler with a loose leash. He relieves himself and stares at dogs a distance away from him. After he is walked back to the shelter. He pulls very hard back into the room and towards the passing kennels. Eclipse is returned to kennel and the leash removed without issue. 9/2/25: It was reported on the behavior board that Eclipse is afraid of stairs. It was also reported that he was kennel fighting and bit the handlers thigh, no broken skin. 8/31/25 (LATE ENTRY): It was reported on the behavior board that Eclipse was nipping at legs upon re-entry. 8/27/25: Eclipse is lying down in kennel upon approach. Handler unlocks the kennel and Eclipse comes forward. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel to the backyard. He is brought to the pen for a dog-dog interaction (see dog-dog notes). After he is briefly social with handler, leaning and rubbing against their legs. He allows brief petting on head. Eclipse walked around the backyard, to a pen further away. He is then aloof with the handler. Handler pet him a long his back briefly and he looked towards the handlers hand but did not respond further. After Eclipse is brought back inside and returned to his kennel without issue

Summary (6):: 8/21/25: Eclipse is reported to be growling. 8/19/25: Eclipse is lying down in kennel with a neutral body. He stretches as the handler unlocks the kennel and leashes him without issue. Eclipse is taken to the street where he walks besides the handler with a loose leash. He occasionally walks ahead, pulling mildly to sniff areas to relieve himself. Eclipse is aloof with the handler throughout the walk, he does not react to bikes and people passing. When he sees dogs he stares at them briefly before turning away and continuing to walk with the handler. Eclipse is brought to the assessment room where he is aloof with the assessor, he sniffs them and wanders around sniffing his surroundings. He avoids collaring when assessor tries even with high value treats. The assessment is ended and Eclipse is walked back to his kennel where he is returned without issue. 8/17/25 (PM): Eclipse is standing in the middle of his kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He begins to wag his tail in a relaxed manner and is easily leashed. He is removed from kennel and taken to the yard for a relief walk. He remains neutral bodied and aloof throughout walk. He tolerates handler pulling out some tufts of hair and has no reaction. He paces around the pen sniffing his surroundings. As he is returned to kennel, he pauses directly in front of his kennel to turn his head slightly and begins to growl at the neighboring dog. Handler quickly uses some leash pressure to secure him in kennel. 8/17/25: Eclipse is siting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins barking at the door as the handler unlocks it. He would back away as the handler tries to leash him and would mouth and bark at the leash as it got closer to him. The handler is quickly able to lasso him and he is then taken outside to the yard. In the yard, he would explore around with sniffing and mark his territory. He had no interest in treats or toys that the handler would offer. He did not interact with the handler. He has to be muscled back into his kennel due to not wanting to go back in

Summary (7):: 8/16/25: PM WALKS: Eclipse is sitting at the front of the kennel when handlers approach. Handler offer him treats treats and he sniffs them but does not take them. He stares at one of the handlers with dilated eyes and a partially open mouth. He then jumps up and barks towards them. The kennel is unlocked and Eclipse lowers his head to push his way out. He is easily leashed on a single slip lead and is taken out of the room where he pulls mildly towards the backyard. In the yard, Eclipse is aloof with the handlers, he is walking around sniffing his surroundings and relieving himself. He is brought to a pen where he continues to sniff around and relieve himself, after he will scrape the ground around the pen. Eclipse will sometimes approach the handlers with a neutral body sniffing their legs but does not interact further. Eclipse is walked back inside and to his kennel. He stops outside and refuses to enter, even with gentle leash pressure. He is muscled in and the leash is removed. As the kennel is locked, Eclipse is pressing his snout against the kennel door. 8/16/25: Eclipse is laying down at the front of his kennel when handler approaches. He stand up with a neutral body, and slow wagging tail as handler calls for his attention. Due to behavior reported upon intake, handler elects to double leash Eclipse. The first handler is able to place a first leash as a second handler gets Eclipse's attention using a squeaker toy. The second leash is easily placed in the same manner. Eclipse is easily walked with very minimal pulling on leash, to the intake room for his medical exam. Upon entering the room Eclipse remains with a neutral body and is lured onto the scale with minimal leash pressure. Eclipse is then easily tethered to the wall, and muzzled as a precaution. Eclipse allows the first handler to scan for a microchip, and readily accepts pets with a loose body. The second handler approaches Eclipse and palpates his abdomen which he allows. When the second handler begins vaccinating Eclipse, his body becomes tense and he begins to low growl. Handlers are able to complete all essential intake tasks without and further escalations. The muzzle is then removed and Eclipse once again has a neutral body. The second leash is then easily removed from Eclipse, and the remaining leash is clipped. He is easily walked out of the room and into his room, where he plants a bit, but is easily coaxed to continue walking with minor leash pressure. Eclipse is easily returned to his kennel without any issues.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Eclipse so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Eclipse has been observed to remain tense during his stay in the care center and will begin to growl at handlers when they attempt to leash him. He was also observed to growl during his medical exam. It is important to move slowly with Eclipse, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
