Jove
Hello, my name is Jove. My animal id is #245186. I am a female gray tabby kitten at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/7/2026.
Jove is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with kitten socialization and helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: Jove is inside of her den. When the cover is lifted, her eyes dilate and ears flatten. She harshly hisses when the scratcher tool is presented to her. Jove does not show interest in treats. She is pet along her cheeks and body and while she does not escalate, she is consistently softly hissing. Pick-up is not attempted. Jove appears to be fearful and given her age at the time of the assessment (16 weeks old) we believe that she hasn't had much human interaction up to this point and as a result is under-socialized; a condition that should be temporary if she is given appropriate interactions. During the assessment she hissed and avoided contact. She needs intensive socialization at the present time. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents who are preferably familiar with kitten socialization or are open to detailed counseling by staff. The speed at which the kitten will become socialized is hard to predict given her age, it is uncertain to determine in advance.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Jove was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/11/26 Vol. Resting in litter box behind a Shoreline cover. Started to flee when a corner was pulled back. Froze briefly but did not return blinks. Then continued fleeing to den with airplane ears. Did not move to investigate a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up in den. Checked back after 10 minutes - had not touched treats but had returned to Shoreline cover side of kennel. Was interested in a pipe cleaner toy, moving her head to follow, but did not bat at it. Leaned over to sniff the scratcher tool with airplane ears, but jerked away to avoid contact. 1/14/26 Vol. Jove was crouched on top of den, with a tense body and wide eyes. When offered a pipe cleaner toy, she initially flattened her ears and backed away. With some coaxing she came forward and sniffed toy but did not engage in play. After a minute or two she went inside her den. When offered squeeze up on scratcher tool, she retreated further into den and was not receptive to further attempts to interact. 1/16/26 Vol. In hidey box - could not see. Put squeeze treat bowl by cubby entry - no movement or reaction. Approached with hard treat on tool, no movement or reaction. Let rest, removed Ended interaction Walked past a few minutes later and she was sticking her head out to sniff treats. When she saw me she pulled back, sitting close to entry. Tried laser toy - she pulled back into box and no movement or reaction. Ended interaction 1/17/26 Vol. Stayed in den throughout the interaction. Offered dry treats and squeeze up on scratcher tool inside the den. Ignored treats. Left squeeze up in a tray outside of den. ate the squeeze up after I left. Looked at me through the den portal if stepped away briefly when I came back then withdrew head further inside. 1/18/26 Vol. Hiding in den, out of sight. Leaned over and peered out portal when tool approached with a cup of squeeze-up and Temptations, then ate some cautiously when left on the portal ledge. Came halfway out to continue eating squeeze-up, but retreated when I approached. Did not eat from refilled cup. Was interested in the laser pointer, coming back to the portal to watch, but remained in den. Did not chase pipe cleaner toy or fishing pole toy. Improving! 1/20/26 VOl. Jove is lying down inside his den. Upon opening the door, she poked his head out, flattened her ears, hissed once and retreated back to the den. She continued to poke her head out as if interested, but retreating upon approach. While ignoring treats passed through the portal, she allowed pets with the back of the tool. Jove will eat crunchy treats in private if they’re dropped off, but it still reluctant to leave den. Needs more time but is not defensive. ~CONTINUED IN GAN!
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Kitten socialization,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Jove is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes she has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
