Popcorn Shrimp is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. He is now displaying signs of defensive aggression. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. What my friends at ACC say about me: Popcorn Shrimp is in his den. When the kennel door opens, he hisses harshly. The assessor slowly lifts the den cover and presents the scratcher tool to the opening of the portal. Popcorn Shrimp lunges forward and swats at the scratcher tool with moderate force and extended claws. The assessor waits a moment, and presents the scratcher tool for Popcorn Shrimp to sniff. He freezes when pet on his cheeks with the tool and begins lip licking when pet along his body. When the den cover is replaced, he hisses and strikes at the den twice, growling loudly. A volunteer writes: Popcorn Shrimp meant no harm when he walked into a building, he only wanted a place to go, so he curled himself up and made himself small, hoping that whoever saw him would let it slide just this once. Except building corners are no place for little kitties, and a Good Samaritan scooped Popcorn Shrimp up and brought him to us. Popcorn Shrimp wasn't very open to the help when that came his way and has similarly been uninterested in ours, but he very much deserves a chance. Snuggled on top of his den when I visited, I complimented his fluffy cheeks and beautiful ears and set about trying to build a friendship by offering snacks. Popcorn Shrimp loves snacks, but not really enough to come around to shelter life.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Popcorn Shrimp was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment. Popcorn Shrimp spent one day in his finder's home where he was reported to become comfortable and did well with the finder's other resident cat. During intake, Popcorn Shrimp appeared very tense, his hairs were raised and his pupils were dilated. Popcorn Shrimp would hiss at handler and had airplane ears. Handler was able to give him churu to which he would relax more and lick treat, he also licked it off handlers finger. Handler was able to pet him, to which he did appeared scared but would allow pets.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: PRIOR ASSESSMENT 3/3/26 Popcorn Shrimp was in the den lip, licking his lips, with large pupils and appearing mildly fearful. He sniffed treats and allowed the assessor to approach and give him gentle petting, although he did do some intermittent, very quiet, low growling. 3/4/26 FB32 Hiding in den. When opening the door and removing the den cover, he hisses and lunges at the door. Kept interaction short to reduce stress. 3/6/26 Vol. Popcorn Shrimp was crouched inside den, looking out with wide dilated eyes. He returned slow blinks after a few moments. With some coaxing, he poked his head out of den to eat squeeze up from scratcher tool, then withdrew back inside. When offered a feather toy, he gave a small hiss. After a few moments, he returned another slow blink and accepted a bit more squeeze up from scratcher tool. He then turned around inside den and lay down facing away from opening. 3/8/26 Vol. Resting in den. Hissed and low growled when approached, then poked head out to watch with dilated eyes and lip licked. Returned slow blinks with sweet talk. Hissed and grumbled more when kennel door was opened and tool approached but then relaxed a bit. Sniffed a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up. Wasn't quite brave enough to eat but allowed cup to be dropped into den. Continued to poke head out, lip-lick, and grumble a bit. Pulled into den to avoid contact with the tool, but remained just inside, watching and lip-licking. 3/12/26 FB20 Popcorn is sitting tense in his den with wide, dilated ears. He begins low growling when the den cover is lifted. Handler waits until he stops low growling and covers him again, leaving him with a tray of squeeze up. 3/13/26 ACFR Popcorn Shrimp was in his den when the handler approached. He immediately growled and hissed as the handler opened the kennel door and lifted the den cover. Popcorn Shrimp did not leave the den and swatted and hissed at the scratcher tool when trying to make contact. 3/20/26 ACFR Popcorn Shrimp is crouched on top of his den with wide eyes and dilated pupils. Handler offers squeeze up on scratcher tool and he quickly eats it. He allows simultaneous petting on head/ears/cheeks/back, and begins to lean in to petting. Once finished with treats, he leans heavily into petting and purrs softly. He eventually rolls onto his side, kneading the air and slow blinking. He remains slightly tense despite enjoying petting but is showing signs of significant improvement. He does not swat, hiss, growl, or attempt to flee. 3/23/26 FB73 Popcorn Shrimp is laying on top of his den, body tense and ears back as the handler approaches. With soft talking he begins to slow blink. Squeeze up is offered on the scratcher tool and he hesitantly leans forward and licks it before pulling his head back. Did not hiss, lunge, or growl. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Popcorn Shrimp is in his den. When the kennel door opens, he hisses harshly. The assessor slowly lifts the den cover and presents the scratcher tool to the opening of the portal. Popcorn Shrimp is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
